Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Night-time bottle?

Hi everyone! I just found this website and am so excited to converse with other parents of toddlers =)I have a question for you all. My son will be 15 mos on the 17th. He still takes his bottle before bed time with milk in it. He drinks a sippy throughout the day (ok, and occasionally wants his bottle for nap time, but not too often) but at night he refuses to lay down without having a bottle first. I feed it to him, then lay him down when he is done and he goes right to sleep. He does not sleep with it. A lot of my family thinks it's appalling that he still takes his bottle =/ And I know the official recommendation and research says children should be off the bottle by 12 mos, but he's not having it! Plus, he JUST started sleeping throughout the night about a month or two ago, so I'd hate to do something to reverse that.My questions are: Did anyone else's LOs still take a night-time bottle at this age? What age did your LOs completely wean? and how did you accomplish it?Thanks so much for reading!

Re: Night-time bottle?

  • Eh. We still do a morning bottle and a nighttime bottle at 13 months. I know people judge the heck out of us. We do a sippy with milk during the day but he only takes like 10oz of milk the whole day if we do only sippies. I figure I would still be nursing him in the morning and at night if he was nursing and a lot of people still do binkies at this age so I don't see how a bottle is that much different. We plan to wean off the bottle completely at closer to 18 months or whenever he decides he wants to drink a measurable amount of liquid from a sippy cup.

  • I think I stopped around 18 months, but I was still giving toddler formula for the night in the bottle.  It took us a couple of weeks to switch to a sippy of milk.  I was in no rush.

My son is 19 mos and we still give him a bottle before bed.  It's part of our routine and I just haven't been anxious to change it.  My plan is to start giving him milk in a sippy cup for a little while and then eventually stopping that.  GL!

  • We ditched the bottle at 11.5 months, so I don't have too much advice for you.

But how many oz are in his bottle?  There is a difference between a binky at bedtime and a bottle full of milk at bedtime.  A bottle at that age is teaching kiddos to eat/drink for comfort.  I can't reference any right now, but there have been studies that show prolonged bottle used in toddlers has a connection to obesity later.

Maybe slowly start dropping how much is in the bottle, then switch to water?

  • We had ditched the night time bottle around 14 months, but then DS got sick and it was the only way he'd drink. I'm hoping to take it away next week, for his 18 month b-day.

  • My son stopped taking bottles at 17 to 18 months. But he stopped having a night time bottle at 12 to 13 months. I moved his last bottle to the beginning of our night time routine so that i could brush his teeth after. I rocked him a little instead of giving a night time bottle.
  • Our daughter is almost 14months old and still takes a bottle for nap time and at bedtime. She will not take a nap without a small bottle and is a monster without the noon nap! She usually doesn't need as much of a bottle if she eats well during dinner, but that's not always the case! We hope to have her off the bottle by 18 months although she seems to wean herself off of things such as her pacifier and nighttime bottles so we are just watching for the signs that she is ready too!
  • I just gradually throughout the day started offering him milk in a sippy cup and dropped one bottle every couple weeks till we were done.  I stopped on his birthday because it really isn't good for their teeth especially a night bottle.  He probably doesn't need it just wants it.  I don't think it will be as bad as people think, just get a cup that is only for milk so he associates it and gradually each day offer more in the cup.

  • Once I transition to whole milk completely I will start on trying to wean from the night time bottle.  My LO still takes one every night before bed.  My DD took one until about 18 months I think.  I then changed it to a sippy and then gradually phased that out by decreasing the amount of milk in it each night.  There is no rush to take away that bottle right now.  I think some babies do it when they are ready.  Obviously I wouldn't want my 2 year old having a bottle of milk at bed time but before that I don't think it's a big deal.

  • DS is still on the bottle in morning and night. I don't have any plans to change that for at least a few months. I am trying to follow his lead. He has done well dropping his midday bottle and drinks straw sippies just fine.
