Bed rails question

I know there have been similar posts on this topic, but my question is slightly different. So, I bought the Safety 1st bed rails that everyone suggested in another thread. However, they keep popping up even though they're in the lock position. I also don't like how I feel trapped in the bed because it's hard to put the rail down when you're in bed. My question is do you think it's safe to use cheaper bed rails? The kind that don't sit on top of the mattress. My baby is 5 months old. Oh, I should add that before the rails we used an Arms Reach cosleeper as a safety net, but I want to pack it up because lo doesn't sleep in it and my bedroom is small enough. TIA!

Eta: this is implied, but just in case it isn't clear we bed share.

Re: Bed rails question

  • I had issues with mine the first night. I didn't have instructions because it was second hand, but DH played with it the next day and got it locked properly. It's quite sturdy once you get it adjusted right. I can't help with the other part though, I just leave it up all the time and go around it. I think this kind is safer because there's nowhere for your baby to slide between. Is it possible to put the bed against a wall?

Ok, so you think it's still possible for a baby to get trapped between the rail and mattress? He just seems so big, 18 pounds, that it's hard to imagine that happening. Of course, I shouldn't take the risk. The bed against the wall isn't an option; plus, I thought that wasn't recommended for safe bed sharing. Although what I'm asking about isn't recommended either...

  • I think it's a judgement call depending on how firm the bedrail is. The ones I've seen for toddlers tend to flex out easily, but Im sure there are better ones out there.
