How old is to old for a binky?

For our first it was gone the second she turned one. With DS he only had it for bed until about a month ago. When you did you shake the habit and how did you?

Re: How old is to old for a binky?

  • Meh, DS is 17 months and has one for naps and bedtime.  I don't see us getting rid of it anytime soon.  His pedi is fine with it.  He said that if DS needs a paci and we get rid of it, he'll probably resort to sucking his thumb (which he says is fine too).

I did try to ditch it at 12 months and it only took DS a few minutes to start sucking his thumb.  So I threw it back in the crib with him.  I figure if he's attached to the paci, at least I can limit it to sleeping time.  He was also a very bad sleeper for the first year, so if the paci helps him sleep, so be it!

He's almost 20 months, and he still has it for bed at night.  We are going to go through some major changes soon, so I'm letting it be.  I'll get rid of it when he's closer to 2.

ETA: response to question 2 - I know some of my BMB moms had great success with the Bye Bye Binky technique.  I may implement some of that with hopes that he'll understand enough reasoning of "Binky is broken, time to go bye-bye!"

  • We went cold turkey with both of my girls at 15 months. We got rid of DD1's because I wanted it gone far enough in advance of her sister being born that she wouldn't think DD2's nuk was her own, and we got rid of DD2's because it was disrupting her sleep.

My personal preference is to have it gone by 18 months at the latest, before too many concerns of dental issues, speech issues, etc. But that's just MY preference, it's not necessarily right for every child.

  • DD is 18 months. She only uses it when she is going for a nap or to bed. When she is teething, it is the only thing she will chew on to cut her teeth. As soon as her teeth are mostly in, it will be going bye-bye. Unfortunately DD has been late with teething...at 18 months, she still only has 10 teeth. Her gums are pretty swollen so hopefully the rest will come through soon and we can ditch the binky at naps and night.

  • We stopped using one at 6 months. He was fairly reliant on it to sleep and I didn't want it to become a horrible habit and end up with a toddler that still used a pacifier.

DD is 18 months and still uses it quite a bit. I've been trying to limit it lately because she has a speech delay and I know it's not helping with that. I don't have any problem with her having it at naptime, bedtime and in the car (she gets really upset in the car for some reason and the paci always calms her down). Throughout the day if I notice her walking around with it in her mouth I will ask her for it and she usually hands it right over and I just put it in my pocket or somewhere else out of her sight and most of the time she's fine without it...I think during the day she just uses it out of habit more than anything so I've been trying to gently limit it...I'm hoping in the next couple weeks to just start leaving it in the crib and maybe keep one in the car.

Around 15 months...completely on accident, although it had been on my mind.  I had put him to sleep one night (took longer than usual) he slept through...I had forgotten to give him his paci.  Figured he did so well without it, might as well nto torture him anymore and got rid of them altogether.

We just got rid of it completely (so 20 months).  She has only had it for naps and bed since about 14 months.  Daycare eliminated it for naps at 14 months, since I told them we were going to get rid of it at night.  We gave in after 3 nights they never gave it back and said she did absolutely fine!  We finally decided we were ready and it did two weeks ago.  First week was rough, but now she doesn't even mention it.   I wanted it gone before the new baby and new transition to a big girl room/bed.  Doing all of that at once would have been traumatic for me, lol (and probably her!)

  • I'll be the odd one out.  We got rid of our it for our oldest just after her 3rd (yes 3rd) birthday.  So like 3 months ago.  She only used it for naps & bed from about a year on, but I was in no hurry to drop it until she could understand why.  It was super easy, no crying, no trying to steal her sister's, no problems of any sort.  So we will do the same with our youngest.  She only gets it for naps & bed now (or if it's just  before naps or bed) so I'm not worried about ill effects.

  • We stopped daytime use by 12 months. We gave it up for bedtime at 24 months.

  • LO has only ever had hers for sleeping, and we only ever gave it to her in the first place because she couldn't tell when she was full as a newborn and would eat and vomit, eat and vomit.  We are going to take hers away after her 15 mo appt I think.  I feel like that is long enough for her to have it, not entirely sure why, but it jjst seems long enough!

  • We still have one -- mostly just at naps and bedtimes, but also if she gets upset and some other fussy times. She is a late teether too, so I'm not into getting rid of it right now. We'll see how it is closer to 2. I had mine til I was about 4 and my husband til he was about 3, so who knows! She didn't use one at first, but she was having a rough time sleeping, so eventually it helped -- we all need our sleep :)

My LO only had a binky for not even 6 months. My niece though is 14 months and always has hers. I feel like she is to old for it already.
