Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby's weight at 1 year

Lurker from 6-9m board....

I have heard a few moms (not on the bump) talking about how their baby was 19 lbs at 6 months, and then only a few pounds heavier (less than 5 pounds heavier) at their LO's year check up.

Anyone have a similar situation? How big was your LO at 6 months, and how big were they at 1 year?

TIA

Re: Baby's weight at 1 year

  • DD is not a year yet, but we went in this week for sick visit and she was 20lbs2oz. She was 8lb1oz at birth and 16lb12oz at her 6 month appointment. I don't think she would be over 21-22lbs at her 1 year.
She is now very mobile and weight gain starts to plateau. Don't be concerned if there isn't much of a gain.

So basically, when they become mobile, it's exercising, so they don't gain as much weight as they had been? Is that true for other readers of this post?

On average they say baby's weight gain in their second 6 months is about half of what they gained in their first 6.

  • I think most babies slow their growth around 9 months to a year. DD was 7-10 at birth, 19 pounds at 6 months and almost 23 pounds at her 9 month check up. She started crawling around 8 months.

  • DS was 7.7 at birth, 19.6 at 6 months and was at the doc a week ago for illness and weighed 23lbs.  He has been eating like a horse the past weeks, so it would not surprise me if heis 25lbs at his one year appt!!

  • I think we've actually had the opposite happen, although I know it's much more common for growth to slow after six months.

DS was 7lb, 5oz. at birth, around 14 at 6 months, 15lb., 4oz. at 9 months and though we haven't been to the doc in a couple of months I think he's around 19 now at 11 months. He has always been super-active, but he eats a ton of food now. Mostly fruits and veggies, but he has been taking in a lot more whole grains, full-fat dairy and meat since he was about 8 or 9 months.

    Every baby is different.

breastfed babies tend to gain weight faster and slow towards a year. FF babies often gain slower and gain more towards a yr

I do believe this is typically the case, but it's worth noting that we BF, and still have had the opposite happen.

This was how DS was.  He gained exactly 10 lbs in his first 6 months, and 5 lbs in his second 6 months.  The smallest gain was between 6-9 months - only a little over a pound.

  • hopefully you arent worried... whaveter your feelings,, just know that every baby is different :)

my son was 20 lbs at 6 months & 31 lbs at one year (a very tall built boy still)

my daughter was 15lbs at 6 months & is just 16lbs at 10 months ! I dont expect she will even nearly reach 20 by 1 year.

I have heard that it's hoped that your baby "doubles their weight by 1". but i am also a mom of 2 & i love alcohol so who knows where my brain "remembered" that from! lol!!

DS was 7lbs 15 oz at birth, 18 lbs 4 oz at his 6 month check up and he's not quite a year yet (almost though) but I weighed him just a couple of days ago and he was 21 lbs 14 oz. He crawled at 7 1/2 months and started walking 3 weeks ago.

It is very normal for weight to slow down past 6 months and as they become more mobile. Don't worry too much.

This has been true for us.

  • I'd have to look at her baby book for her weight at 6 months, but Olivia was 24 pounds and nearly 36 inches at her 1 year appt.

  • My LO's weight has definitely slowed down.  Baby's weight at 1 year should be about 3 times their birth weight.

We'd had pretty significant gains at all of my DS's appts until his 9 month.  Then he went from 16 to 17 lbs.  The dr. was still happy with it, so I guess that's all that matters.  He's eating like a horse but he moves ALL THE TIME.  He's not crawling but he butt scoots and bounces and is just constantly in motion.

He was 4lb 9oz at birth, 13 lbs at 3 months, 16 lbs at 6 months and 17 lbs at his nine month check-up.

  • MY LO only went up a few pounds at a year. I asked other moms on mommypolls.com and other sites and looks like they start to even loose some weight sometimes since they start to move around so much.
