Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone has a "serious" baby?

I'm not really worried or anything, but am curious - does anyone have a "serious" baby?  DS is 10 months old, and although he smiles and laughs when he is very happy, he doesn't do it often; and definitely won't do it for a stranger.  Whenever he meets someone new, he'd just stare and stare and never cracks a smile.  I've gotten numerous comments about how serious he is.  Even when he is with people he knows well, most of the time it's like he is "thinking" all the time - i.e. he would be concentrating very hard on whatever task he is working on (playing with a block, string, etc.).  A typical example would be music class - I take him to music class every week and out of the 10 or so babies in the class, he is the only one who would have his eyes glued to the teacher the entire time; but he would hardly smile unless it's a song that he REALLY loves.

Re: Anyone has a "serious" baby?

  • DS is much more likely to smile and laugh at home or daycare than out and about or even if friends come over.  Rarely he will cry a little if they get in his face, but mostly he just stares and studies them.  He generally doesn't mind being handed off to "strangers" (thank you daycare).  I've decided this is the mark of a genius. ;)

Yes & it gets on my nerves when people say it. I will say she is a super happy & laughing baby at home but when we are out & about & especially when someone is talking to her she doesn't know, its crickets.

  • Same here.  He will squeal and laugh at me when we are home but out in public it is his stone face. :)

This is exactly DS as well. He studies what is around him and is very alert. I don't mind, it just means he is less likely to have a meltdown wherever we are if he is intrigued by what he sees or hears.

My LO is. He does smile and giggle a fair amount, but he's mostly a concerned observer of things. Unlike DS1 who was and is Mr. Outgoing.

Yes! People we know who have met him comment that if it wasnt for seeing pictures of him they would think he never smiles. He has lots of smiles and giggles for me, dh, and my mom. And this week he just started smiling at the early interventionist who has been coming once a week since November. Other than that he is almost always serious.

My DS is the same way in public...at home, he's a little clown. ;)

Dd is pretty serious in public too. When people comment rudely about her not smiling or laughing at them I have started commenting back that they must just not be funny enough.

    LOVE IT!

DD hates loud and "in your face" kind of people. She will smile and warm up to people if given time, but usually people expect a smile right away. Sorry, it won't happen that way!
