Eye drops + resistant 2YO = help?

Anyone have any success getting eye drops in a wiggly fighting 2YO?

My little one has allergies and her pediatrician recommended drops 3x a day to prevent infection but she is fighting them like the plague.

Any strategies? tricks? advice?

Re: Eye drops + resistant 2YO = help?

  • Two things helped us:

    1. Don't fight her, include her. I made a big deal of letting him "put" drops in Daddy's eyes and my eyes, then told him to do his eyes. With him laying down, and me helping to hold the bottle he would put the drops in his eyes. It worked because he was too busy trying to get the drops in to care about what was actually happening.

    2. When all else fails, put the drop in the inside corner of the eye and when they open the eye the drop will roll in.  Good luck!

  • When my kid had pink eye, I had to sit on the floor, pin his arms down with my knees, hold his head still with one arm and apply the drops with the other. Good luck!

  • Sit down on the floor with your legs out in front of you. Lay DD down with her head between your legs and her feet pointed toward your feet. Pin her arms down with your legs and hold her head between your thighs. Use one hand to open her eye and the other to put in the drop.

  • Eyes closed...  drop in corner.  Open eyes.  Always works with mine!

  • We're also doing the "start with a closed eye" method and it's working GREAT for us!

  • Put them in your pocket to warm them up to body temperature.  Less uncomfortable to go in the eye (works for ear drops too)

  • Rewards like stickers or food.  We had to do drops twice a day for a week.  It was horrible at first but after the 2nd or 3rd time he began asking us to give him drops so he could get his reward!  We used ice pops, you might want something smaller tho for 3 times a day.  When he finished we gave him a graduation present of a truck & told him that there'd be no more pops but this was his present for being so good.  No problems!
