Babies: 6 - 9 Months

can your LO find & put back his own paci?

If so, when did this happen? DD is 6 1/2 months & this seems to be her biggest problem with sleep. I've tried a lot, nothings working & am getting ready to do Ferber even though I really don't want to. But I'm wondering if she's around the corner from being able to do this, if I should just wait. Thanks!

Re: can your LO find & put back his own paci?

  • Yes, she can! I think my daughter was about 6- 6 and 1/2 months old. Right around when she started sleeping through the night. BUT I did Ferberize her which is something you said you don't want to do. I usually put my LO to bed with a paci in her mouth then place one (a colorful one) in the corner of her crib. If she wakes she'll usually get that one and put it in her mouth.

If you want your LO to learn to put in his own pacifier I would suggest during play time have him put it in his mouth. Set it away from him but within reach and see if he understand what its for and have him practice putting it in his mouth on his own. Eventually he'll get it! GL!

Yes!  He learned to do this around 6.5 months.  It was the best discovery ever!  Now if he loses his paci during the night he usually wakes up and either sticks it back in or rolls to his side to get it back in his mouth.  For a while before he would take it out of his mouth during the day and examine it.

Yep.  He learned to do it during the day around 6 months, but just in the past week (he's 7 months 1 week) he's gotten pretty good at doing it in the MOTN too.  I do put an extra paci in bed with him.

  • DS is 7 months today, and he just learned how to put his binky in his mouth like last week. He still doesn't put it back in his mouth when he sleeps, but I don't know if he just wants to come into our bed or if he truly cannot put it back in his mouth.

If I were you OP, I would just wait a little bit longer. DS is really close to "getting it", so I think your LO will get it sooner than later. :)

  • Hit or miss. Sometimes she does and others I have to find it for her, however we either use avent or mams and they both have glow in the dark pacis and she will find them better because it catches her eyes.
  • Yes, he started doing it a little bit before 7 months

DS just got really good at that in the last month or so, so at about 8 months. He could do it during the day while playing when he was younger but night time took him a while to catch on.

jfresh- your siggy pic is the most adorable thing ever!

  • This didn't happen for us until recently, 7 months. I put about 3 pacifiers and 2 wubanubs around their cribs at night so that when they move around, and wake up, there should always be one easily to be found!!!! One of the paci's is a night time one as well. We use Nams. It glows in the dark. Until this, I got up every time one of them whined for a paci. It sucked, but so glad they can now find it.

  • DS only uses a paci when he is sleeping so no he has not learned how to find it and put it back in.  I have no clue if he could do it when fully awake.
