Can you find the sex out at 14 weeks?

My  friend had a 2D ultrasound at 14 weeks and they told her she is having a girl. She says it is a really high tech 2D machine and they can find out that early. Do any of you know for sure how accurate that is? Even her doctor told her it's not possible.

Re: Can you find the sex out at 14 weeks?

  • I know of elective u/s offices people can go to, but I wouldn't put much stock into it. At a hospital, its basically their best guess. From 18 weeks on they can get a better gauge on it.

  • It's commonly called "the angle of the dangle" theory. Baby's genitalia isn't fully formed yet at 14 weeks, but it's getting there. It's not very accurate, but I learned today that it may be more accurate if it predicts a boy. If it's a girl the "dangle" (I hate that word) will point down. With a boy it will point up. If it's pointing down, it could either be a girl, or a boy that's a "slow riser" if it's pointing up, there may be a better chance that it's a boy. I wouldn't go running out for pink or blue paint or clothes just yet, no matter what it says. It's mostly just for fun, but it can easily be wrong. The A/S at 20 weeks is generally more accurate because everything's formed enough for them to tell at that point (but even the A/S gets it wrong sometimes)

  • i dont think so , i know i found out at 16 weeks and i had my 20 week a/s yesterday and they were right i am def having a boy :) ..  would not bank on finding out at 14 weeks for sure what the sex is its way to early for that
  • She has already posted it on facebook and she posted she was pregnany on fb at like 6 weeks.

  • I wouldn't trust it. Too early.

  • A friend of mine who is high risk and gets ultrasounds 1-2 times a month was told at 14 weeks the guess was a boy.  Every other ultrasound after looked like that and it was for sure confirmed at her anatomy scan.  That being said, what the PP said about boys being easier to predict, this would make sense with my friend and her having a boy.

I am having a 3d elective scan at 16 weeks 5 days. The place I'm going will not do it before 16 weeks but they say they are 100% accurate 16 weeks and after. I think it'd be a lot easier to tell too because of the 3d vs 2d. Seeing as how they won't even let me come in before 16 weeks I'd say it COULD be right at 14 weeks but I wouldn't go announcing it or buying anything from it until it was confirmed at the A/S scan.

  • With ds2 he showed his goods at 12 weeks. I still have the ultrasound pics somewhere.   The tech was looking at my gallbladder and had time so he took a peek at the baby.

DS3 (pg with now) I had an ultrasound at just shy of 14 weeks and was told boy then.  Had a/s scan Tue and still all boy!

So yes it is possible boys are easier to see though.

  • With my last baby i had an U/S done at 14weeks & it was clear as day that it was a boy.  So yes you are able to tell the sex of a baby at 14 weeks it just depends on the position of the baby.

  • My doc gave us an ultrasound at 16 weeks. She suspected baby was a girl, but made it clear she wasn't certain. We didn't tell anyone, we didn't buy anything, we didn't start only thinking of girl names. We waited until we got confirmation at our 20 week u/s that she was a girl.

Our doc was right, but I am glad we didn't start planning for a girl, in case she was wrong.

That is not true. All babies have the same external nub at 12-14 weeks. They are identical regardless of sex.

I hope you were billed and had to pay 100% out of pocket for your unauthorized u/s with DS2. That tech should be fired. You were there for a gallbladder ultrasound, not a fetal one.

Hate to burst your bubble yes it can be done not often but yes. Not all babies grow exactly the same. In the ultrasound you could clearly see.    And no I was not charged. He owned his equipment and did what he pleased with it.

I am sitting here rolling at how mad you got over an internet stranger!

  • I had an ultrasound at 14 weeks (well, closer to 15, 14w5d) with my son and was told a boy. I obviously didn't start shopping and go register, but it was confirmed at 20 weeks that he was in fact a boy.

Because you also have an u/s picture of a girl at 12 weeks that is clearly not a boy?  The point is what you saw could have been pretty much the same externally if it was a girl, so an u/s with what looks like a penis won't prove anything.  It was a guess.
