Habit or tic???

Ok. I'm hesitant to post this bc MH thinks I'm crazy and she is fine, but I'm really worried.

E does this thing sometimes where she throws her head to the side... Like her ear touches her shoulder and her chin touches the side of her chest. She sort of scrunches her face, but smiles while she's doing it.
It seems to happen more often when she is tired. Tonight I swear her eyes looked twitchy while she did it, but MH just said it was bc she was standing at the coffee table and lost her balance when she tilted her head.

Thoughts? Would you be worried? Anyone else's babes do something like this?

Re: Habit or tic???

  • I wouldn't read too much into it. I don't have any experience with something like that but it doesn't sound too worrisome unless you notice it a lot more frequently. Was she being "sneaky"? Sometimes DS would give me a funny look and turn his head funny when he was up to no good. If it persists I'd bring it up to your pediatrician next check up. Hope it's nothing more than a silly girl!

Thanks cwhit. I don't think she was being sneaky, but it definitely seems to be when she's really tired or really excited. She has her 9 month in two weeks. I'll definitely ask the pedi then if nothing else.

  • M was doing it A LOT last week, almost always when he's sitting in his highchair during meals.  He would just tilt his head (usually to the left), almost like he was doing a break dancing move.  He hasn't done that as much this week.  who knows?

  • I don't think it is anything to worry about, but I would ask about it at your next pedi appt just because it's on your mind.

Oh thank goodness other littles are doing this too! I am so relieved. At first I thought it was cute and silly, but she started doing it so often it made me nervous. I have a family history of neuromuscular disorders so I got a little panicky. Thanks again ladies. I don't know what I would do without SAIF to keep me sane!

Like others posted, I wouldn't be too concerned about it but I totally don't think you're crazy for posting this at all.

My daughter did this thing when she was about 9 months old where she would throw her head from side to side (almost like shaking her head "no" but super fast) and she looked like a looney.  I freaked and told my husband I thought there was something wrong with her and of course he told me there was something wrong with me and not her, and eventually she got over it.

THEN my son did almost the exact same thing around 9 months too.  I again got worried for a sec, but then remembered that my daughter did it all of the time and he actually hasn't done it in quite awhile now.

I think they are just exploring new sensations and feelings and realizing they are more in control of their bodies now than they ever have been before (if that makes sense).

That does make sense. Thanks for sharing, that makes me feel better.
