Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Croup

On Saturday night, I heard DS2 cough and thought to myself that it sounded a little weird but didn't think much of it because he only coughed a few times in the hour and a half before bed. I laid him down and made sure to keep the baby monitor right next to me just in case. About an hour and a half after I laid him down for the night I could hear him having really raspy breathing. I go into our room where he sleeps and pick him up and it only took about 3 minutes for him to go from raspy breathing to barely breathing at all. I called 911 and we were taken to the emergency room where they gave him steroids to open up his airway. It was probably the scariest moment of my life. From his first cough to him not being able to breath only took 3 hours. I had no idea croup could get life threatening so fast. I wish I had known so I could have kept a better eye on him when I first heard his "weird" cough. I just want to pass this on because I wish someone had told me. I am blessed that he is doing fine and is quickly recovering but it could have been a much different outcome.

  • DS1 had croup shortly before his first birthday, we rushed him to the hospital, it was the scariest moment of my life.

I hope your LO feels better soon!
