Prescription formula

If your LO uses rx formula, was his/her pediatrician reluctant to prescribe it? DD has been throwing up (not just spit up) a lot since she was born. We tried Enfamil newborn, infant, gentle ease, and finally AR. the AR helped but is still throwing up multiple times a day. I was going to ask her pediatrician for a rx formula. Are they usually happy to give a rx or are they hesitant for some reason?

I know they're expensive, I'm not worried about that.

Re: Prescription formula

  • Maybe I'm missing it but have you tried a soy formula?  I'd definitely go that route before an Rx.

  • If it's not really thick, it just comes right back up. I'm really afraid to try something like soy because she just doesn't get *any* food when she starts throwing up. She did it while I was BFing, too, though not nearly as much. I am lactose intolerant so I'm wondering if maybe she inherited that from me? I don't know, I am going to ask her pedi, obviously, but in the mean time I worry about all the damage it is doing to her throat/esophagus.
  • Is your pedi saying its reflux? Is she on any meds? DS is on Pepcid for his excessive "spit up" we were going through 3 - 5 outfits a day in the beginning. We have finally at almost 6 months found the magic combination for us. He still spits up but it no longer bothers him and is finally happy. Pepcid 2 x a day and nutramigen formula with oatmeal as his solids. Pepcid treats the reflux and the nutramigen seems to alleviate any tummy trouble. There was no clear signs of lactose intolerance (blood or mucous in stool) but the formula truly made a 180. So drs are convinced that he has a milk protein sensitivity. You can get nutramigen in stores without prescription. it might be worth a try. If the throw up is truly that bad you should go see a GI specialist.
  • The RX formulas are thinner than the regular stuff and meant for children with severe MSPI. If your child doesn't have MSPI then you won't get the formula. Go see a specialist cuz if she's puking that much is may be a GI problem like MSPI and not reflux.

Ditto the pp. DS is on Elecare (he has a milk protein allergy) and we have to thicken it with rice cereal to keep it down. We are also dealing with reflux. DS takes Axid 2 xs per day and Prevacid 1x.

With DD (who also had the allergy) it was a long 8-9 mo b/c her pedi kept telling me it was reflux and newborn acne. He told me there was no way she had a milk allergy. Finally I listened to my mommy gut and took him to the derm who referred us to the allergist. Within 48 hrs I had a whole new child who didn't scream after every feeding, spit up ridiculous amounts and she finally wasn't covered in an entire body rash. If you have concerns, talk to your pedi. If things don't improve, keep talking till someone listens and helps.

PS- the allergist gave us a case of samples to try to see if it made a difference before we spend a lot of money. A case of Elecare (6 small cans) costs over $200. OUCH!

  • I agree with PP...trust your gut feelings on this. My nephew had trouble with formula since birth (he's 16 months now.) My SIL tried every formula and he kept nothing down. His pediatrician finally referred them to a pediatric GI specialist-who found that the bottom portion of his esophagus didn't close properly to allow the formula to go into his stomach and down into his GI track. He told her that this was a growing issue for some babies and that by 5-7 months they should see a difference. He suggested the formula Nutramigen. To this day it was the only formula that would "stick." By the time he started eating solids, they noticed a significant improvement! He is completely healthy now-no vomiting and as active as a toddler should be! Good look to you! If you don't feel like you're getting the right diagnosis/treatment from your LO's pediatrician, keep looking...there is someone who can help!

I would try a Zantac Rx before the formula. It would be a lot more cost effective. Do you know if it's even reflux or could it be an allergy?

  • They did tell us it was reflux. But from what PP said about the acne and rash, I'm thinking it might be a mis-dx. She does have acne and a body rash and we can't figure out where it is coming from. Okay, I'm definitely going to bring this up to her pedi and bring her to a dermatologist if I have to.

The throw up is bad... when she wasn't taking AR, it honestly looked like the entire bottle just came back up. Okay, I'm just going with my gut here and I'm going to tell him I think something is wrong.

  • Have you tried Similac Alimentum?

My sister in law doctor wrote it as a prescription so the insurance company would pay for it or at least a portion cause its expensive
