Bottle issues

I need help! So last week I dropped my last pumping session, which means DS nurses in the morning, gets 3 bottles of Formula at DC, BFs at bedtime, and BF or formula once overnight. Ever since last Thursday he rarely finishes his bottles, not even half! He only drinks 1-2 oz per bottle at daycare, and last weekend he didn't finish his bottles at home either. Just weird he went from 18 oz of formula + 3 nursing sessions a day to 6-8 oz + 2 nursing sessions.

Last Thursday I had to pick him up from DC early due to a 101 degree temp, stayed home with him on Friday and he wasn't much better, woke up with 102.5 deg on Saturday and then that was about it. I swear he's teething but still has nothing to show for it. I don't know what the deal is. And I have no idea what I can do. The only thing I know is he's definitely not consuming enough.

He gets fruit puree for breakfast, fruit or veggie puree for lunch, and some kind of meat/veggie puree combo for dinner (all about 3-4 oz worth each meal). He's about sick of purees now too, so I know I need to start finger foods. I stopped giving him oatmeal/cereal a couple months ago when we started supplementing with formula because the extra iron was causing constipation. Should I be giving him cereal? And if so, what would the cereal/milk ratio be if I'm trying to up his milk/formula consumption?

Gosh it's so frustrating when I think I've gotten him figured out, things go completely whacko!

Re: Bottle issues

  • DS has always been big on his bottles (28 oz per day normally), but last week he went through a spell where he wasn't finishing his bottles. About the time I started making smaller bottles, his appetite picked back up. Hopefully your LO is just going through a phase b/c he didn't feel well.

Are you giving him bottles before, with, or after his meals? I have heard that giving the bottle about an hour before the meal helps. I have also found with DS that I have to give his bottles in a fairly quiet room. If he can see the dogs or other people, he is too distracted to eat well. Feeding him at a restaurant is nigh impossible.

I wouldn't worry about getting him more cereal unless you want to add it to the purees for some texture. Stage 2 purees are too runny for DS, so I add about 1-2 tbsp of oatmeal or rice to thicken up 3-4 oz of puree. If you encounter constipation issues, try to keep some pear or prune juice (or puree) on hand to mix with his sippies or meals. GL, mama! I feel like this when it comes to DS's naps! Our LOs are very similar! DS is too easily distracted so I've had to feed him in a quiet room by ourselves. I used to put a little cereal in with his fruit to thicken it up but stopped a couple weeks ago when he started needing more formula. I really hope this doesn't last cuz it's starting to worry me.

  • Things are very similar here.  I dropped my last pumping session about a week ago.  But we have never been able to get my son to take more than 2-3 ounces at a time other than at bedtime.  For about 2 months he's been nursing at around 11pm, 4am, and 9am with me (we just dropped to 3 sessions by eliminating a morning session just because I can't get him to be interested) and taking 2-4 ounces during the day and 4-5 ounces at bedtime (I'm at work afternoons/evenings).  My supply has been drying up over this time and he still isn't taking much more formula, maybe an extra 2-3 ounces at wake-up every few days.  So we've been on this low formula schedule for a long time.  He's gaining weight, thriving, happy etc.  So maybe this is a phase for your LO but even if he doesn't take much more it could be okay.  Check with your pedi of course but mine made the point they are just getting bigger and as their growth slows they don't have the caloric needs of a newborn.  It makes me a little sad that he's going up so much.

My son is on all table foods and most days eats a fair amount of that, though there are days when he doesn't eat much either.   He has water from a water bottle or sippy cup so I know he's getting plenty of fluids.  I was worried about the low formula intake for a while too but DS is doing great with it.  Hope it all works out.  Good for you on making it this far with nursing and pumping and hope you are enjoying the pump free workday as much as I am!
