UPDATE Dry All Night

I started noticing about 3 weeks ago that LO was waking up dry. Like 10 hours of no peeing. She always gets up and eats and then pees a ton. Is it normal for her to have that kind of bladder control? She's probably dry 5 nights out of 7.

Response from pediatrician

Usually infants at this age are not able to hold their urine for so long , however as long as she is urinating well during the daytime and there are no changes in the urine color or smell or concentration, I would not be worried.

Guess I'm just paranoid. Maybe she won't be a bed wetter like her parents!

Re: UPDATE Dry All Night

  • Maybe she's ready to potty train?

    Kidding :P

I've honestly never heard of this.  I would say it's out of the ordinary, but I don't really know.

Are you sure she's actually totally dry?  Maybe she's only wet a little bit, but not totally saturated the diaper?

She's completely dry. Not even a little bit. For example, she nursed probably 2 ounces then took a 4 ounce bottle around 9:00 pm, then nursed at 6:00 am. She woke up for the day at 8:00 am and no pee. Then she filled her diaper to capacity, it looke like I had let her pee all day with no change. It's weird. But she pees and poops normally all day long. Like every hour.

  • there were quite a few nights in a row when dd would be dry through the night....and then when she was starting to wake up she'd pee....sometimes all over me yay! but she hasn't in a while.....but if we change her before she falls asleep, it's not always super full when she wakes up

My LO does this! Don't know if it is normal though. I actually meant to ask her pedi at last appt. but forgot. I feel like you could break a window with her "ten pound" wet diaper after eating in the morning.

Same here! I just wrote her pedi an email. I'll post what she says when I hear back.

I had this happen a couple of times, and when I asked the pedi, he said it might be time to up his formula intake, and also to try a little water (4 oz spaced during the day.) I haven't noticed a dry diaper since! GL!
  • This happened with DS1, but I don't think that it was until he was a bit older. I doubt that there is anything wrong, especially if she is filling the diaper in the morning. However, for peace of mind it wouldn't hurt to talk to the pedi.

  • The last couple weeks (with a couple exceptions) DS pees very little overnight. It's not completely dry but it's not the super heavy diaper it used to be. He eats ALL night long (every 1-4 hours...pending on the night) but how much he eats or doesn't eat doesn't seem to affect whether it will be a heavy or light pee night.

He pees and poos normal during the day and is acting normal/happy so I've just chaulked it up to normal. I forgot to ask my pedi about it.

Good to know! Thanks for the update!

  • Huh.  Good to know.

I definitely don't think you were being paranoid.  I would have been concerned too.
