Anyone else trying to see it soon?

Re: And now, to fan a different kind of flame

  • I am interested in seeing it, but I think I'll have to re-read the book first. I have forgotten the entire story.

However, we are hoping to rent Silver Linings Playbook this weekend- that's at Redbox by now right?

  • I've never seen it. I would think so though. It surprised me that she won an Oscar because I didn't think she was all that good in The Hunger Games. So let me know what you think.

I rarely agree with awards shows- I don't pay attention to them anymore. I thought she did well in Hunger Games, but she was not anything like what I pictured for Katniss. I've come to terms with the idea that Hollywood does not make movies from books like I see them.

It might very well be that I was skewed by the whole movie. THGs were the first book/series that made me need to pick it up again right after I finish and reread from the beginning. I was upset that Peeta's eyes weren't blue, that they made all of the contestants (like District 2) look like they did not want to play the game, etc. I also felt like it glossed over the story instead of enhance the whole thing.

Saw Silver Linings Playbook from the Redbox last week. I'd imagine it's not to everyone's taste--it's quirky and kind of dark--but my husband and I both really enjoyed it. Thought Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper had great chemistry.

I've read the mixed reviews but I'm still excited to see Gatsby with my best friend next week. We both really liked the book/Robert Redford movie when we were in high school so it's sort of a nostalgic thing for us to see this version together even if its mediocre.

The bolded is me, too.  I know I read the book, but I can't remember how it goes at all.  I want to re-read it first, then see the movie.  But lord only knows when I'll get time for that :/

  • I loved Silver Linings Playbook, and Jennifer Lawrence had a lot more personality in that than she does in the Hunger Games. But SLP is a bit quirky and dark as PP said, but I still think just about anyone would like it.

As for Gatsby, I love the book and was excited for this, until I saw a preview and realized I would probably have a headache if I watched that much jumping around with the type of soundtrack it has. I also usually dislike Baz Luhrman, with the exception of Moulin Rouge. Plus I like the story of the Great Gatsby so much and I think it stands on it's own, so I don't get the need to make it an assault on the senses.

  • DH wants to go see this, but I'm not sure if I'm sold on it yet. The reviews seem not so great.

As for Silver Linings Playbook - both DH and I loved it!

Trust me on this - don't read the book again.  I'm a big "read the book first" person usually but Gatsby has twists and it's best if you have forgotten them.

I also find that when I re-read a book before a movie... I tend to get a little extra stabby when things change because everything is fresh in my mind. If I haven't read it in a little while, as long as the majority of the movie is correct I enjoy it.
