DS eats 3 solid meals a day, plus 2 snacks. We used to nurse 4 times a day and he would drink about 3 to 4 ounces of formula out of a bottle in addition to the solids. He happily drinks water out of a sippy. With my milk supply dwindling, we have been trying to give him more formula from a bottle, but he has never really liked formula so it has always been a huge struggle.
For the past week or so, we've been down to 1 or 2 nursing sessions a day + 5 to 6 ounces of formula throughout the day, so at most he is getting only 10 to 12 ounces a day, which I know isn't enough. A few nights ago, I gave him a bottle right before bed and he drank 6 ounces. I was estactic. So I've been giving it to him ever since. He usually would take 4 to 6 ounces. This is at around 7:45 p.m. (and he eats a big dinner at 6:30). But now I'm reading that people are weaning their LOs off of the bottle at 12 months, so it seems like I shouldn't be giving him the night-time bottle? But then he wouldn't get enough formula. Trust me, we've tried very hard to get him to take more formula throughout the day but he just won't. It seems like his biggest intake is right before bed.
What should I do?
Re: Night time bottles - so confused (sorry it's long)
If he won't drink formula out of the sippy, then I would just keep giving him the bottle for now. How old is he?
We were doing the same thing with formula supplementation, except with only 2-3 ounces and because he will be 1 in a couple of weeks, when the last box of formula was empty we just started giving him regular organic milk in a sippy instead of buying more formula. I plan to start weaning him completely from the breast to regular milk in about a week. He LOVES regular milk.
Also, if it makes you feel any better, our pede said that if he is eating three solid meals and snacks, as long as he gets two good nursing sessions a day he is fine. We still do four, but sometimes he goes through periods where he will refuse a nursing session completely.
