Fears

My 4.5 year old is suddenly afraid of everything. Some she knows are irrational (witches, monsters) but she still can't get past it. She's afraid of the dark, being In Her room alone, sleeping alone... She won't ride the Scooby Doo ride at Six Flags because it looks scary, but wants to ride others that are scary to me!

anybody else experiencing a spike in fears? I'm sure it's a phase, but just wanted to hear from others.

Re: Fears

  • Yep!  I try to talk to him about the fears and reassure him.  We also work on being "brave", what he should do when he's scared, etc.

I think there was a post on this board about this topic somewhat recently.  I just got an email from babycenter about it too.

  • Yes - DD is almost 3.5, but she started being scared of stuff about half a year ago. She was also scared of the dark and sleeping alone, so now she sleeps with her closet light on and several stuffed animals in her bed.
  • Well, I feel a little better all of a sudden.  I'm sorry to hear you are going through this, but I am too - with playing outside.  DS suddenly won't be outside even for 1 minute alone (in a fully fenced, totally safe yard he has been playing in for years) - like if I step right in the sliding door to grab a tissue or whatever, he freaks out, even though he can see me.  Says it is the wind in the trees behind our property - but he won't stay out now even on non-windy days.  It is bad timing that this fear for him & suddenly a fear of "monsters" when alone in a room or her bed for DD are happening right as we come up to the new baby arriving.  Hoping they are over this by the time baby arrives!
