This cradle cap is kicking my behind!

So, we've tried olive oil, baby oil, and Head & Shoulders (as prescribed by a doc). Yet, DS's cradle cap keeps coming back.

Do I need to be more religious about doing this stuff daily, despite the fact DS does not get a bath daily? Is there something else I should try?

What am I missing about getting rid of this nastiness? (Although I must say it is not a bad case, just persistent and kind of gross.)

we have it too-not bad, just annoying. are you using a fine tooth come to brush it out when you put the oil? i would be more religious about it and just deal with baby looking slightly greased for a few days. we do that and it seems to be much better. we put baby oil gel every day and then comb the flakes out but leave the oil in.

  • My son has a very mild case of cradle cap, what I read was to use mineral oil, if you haven't tried it already. It's supposed to allow the skin to breath better than most other oils. I had a difficult time finding it, it's in the aisle with the enema supplies. Good luck. :)

  • i use coconut oil, let it sit a few mins then comb out.  When he gets a bath, we lightly scrub his head with the wash cloth also.

  • We put olive oil on few a few minutes then combed it out. Scrubbed gently with a baby brush to get the oil out. Then used another fine tooth comb after it was all clean. I think we did it 2 days in a row; then skipped a day; then once more and it hasn't come back.

  • According to the med sites, you have to wash the oil out immediately.  We just lathered up in the tub with shampoo and then I used a toothbrush to dislodge the scales while lathered.  I used a washcloth to wipe off the dislodged parts.  After that, all gone.

DS still has his, luckily its never been too bad, it just looks like dry scalp and has never become that nasty yellow patch stuff.

It's so much better after I committed to rubbing baby oil on his scalp and brushing it a baby comb twice each day. It seems like it's almost gone now that I've been doing it religiously for a week. Before then I was only doing it on bath day.

I just do it on the diaper changing pad, I put a towel down under his head and basically drench his scalp with baby oil as he lays there and plays with a toy...sometimes I have to keep him from touching his scalp since his fingers are straight to his mouth. I rub it with my finger tips and let it sit on there for five or so minutes. Then I pat it drier with the towel and use the baby brush to gently rub the spots. It looks better immediately after I'm done...but I find if I skip a time it reverts back. I skipped it last night and it actually looked pretty good this morning....but like I said, I've been doing it straight for a week.

  • I use Tea Tree Oil (you can buy it in the hair care section for African-American hair)  I put it on her scalp, rub it in and let it soak while she plays.  I use a soft bristled brush and and brush he scalp, wash and rinse.  It works great for us!

Hi, I am new to posting but am going through the same. Per the doctor, I have tried Head and Shoulders and tea tree oil and it keeps returning, as in a few hours after the oil, brush, and wash process. He also suggested mineral oil which I've picked up today. Previously baby oil and olive oil did not work. The doctor said to only wash twice a week however I am thinking I may need to do it more religiously as well. Hoping the mineral oil works...
  • We had really good luck with Mustela Newborn Shampoo. He had really thick scales all over his head and It took all his cradle cap off in just a few applications. We've been using it twice a week since, and it's never come back.

  • Brushing & using coconut oil helped DD's really fast.
  • Every other day I've been using a baby brush to loosen the flakes, then applying coconut oil, then bath, then combing out the flakes. Most of it went away except for around her forehead and a small patch on the crown, both those areas were red and irritated. I dabbed breastmilk on those spots with each feeding for a few days (while still doing the coconut oil before bath) and its pretty much gone now :)

Our dr also recommended head and shoulders or selsun blue.  My DD has a really bad case where it oozes and itches her - she scratches and makes it bleed.  I don't have any magic cures as we are still battling it.  Hopefully someone makes a great recommendation!

  • We used baby oil let it sit for 15 min then used a baby brush and brushed all directions to get the dead skin off once all the dead skin was off we showered and used head and shoulders. It hasn't come back and we did that like 2 weeks ago. I still do the baby oil and head and shoulders during one of her baths during the week.

This worked really well for us too.
