Hi there,
We just phone interviewed a nanny based on the recommendation of another family (we don't know the other family, but they gave us a recommendation on our local neighborhood list-serve) and really like her.
Just wondering what the etiquette was here and if it was appropriate to ask the previous family (the one that is providing a reference for her) how much they paid her. Is this acceptable?
Thanks for the info!!!
Re: Ok to ask previous family how much they paid the nanny?
I'm a nanny and I expect that this happens when families check my references. However it would not be polite to say something like...I know we posted saying we'd pay $15/hr, or you requested $15/hr but the Jonses said they only paid your $12/hr.
I think you can certainly ask for the info, but I wouldn't use it for much. If anything if you did not discuss salary and the Joneses paid her $12 and you can afford $13 do it, she'll totally put more effort in and think you guys actually value her and her experience.
BTW, you can always ask her what her last salary was, that's pretty common in any job field.
Hi there!
I'm a professional nanny/house manager, business owner, and member of the INA (International Nanny Association). My recommendation would be to not worry about what 'Family A' paid. Your budget is what it is and, if this person is the right fit for your family, agreeing on a salary you're both comfortable with is key.
My company is working to help provide some answers to the questions so many parents are asking about nanny hiring protocol. Hiring a terrific nanny that you can count on long-term is such a confusing minefield with so very few established guidelines!
All of the above said, the average pay for a nanny of one child in the city fluctuates between $12 - $14 with two weeks of paid vacation. Of course, there are outliers on both sides of that range, but that's - I hope - a good starting reference point for you!
Best of luck!
