Tips on handprint art

I know some of you have done the handprint art with your LOs-- any tips or tricks for a successful masterpiece? I got a killer deal on (5) 2x2 canvas sheets for 11.99$ at Michaels which changed my course of  Mother's Day gifts soo we are making garden themed handprint art tonight as a family!

Any thoughts or suggestions are helpful!

TIA!

  • Good luck!
Try to do it when he's in a cooperative mood!

See if he will help paint his feet, then it's not so ticklish.

  • We did handprints for handprint flowers today. Max did pretty well. We did some practice ones first. I made sure Max was happy and got him excited for the project Oh and don't overload the hand with paint, the print won't turn out as nice. He did ball up his hands some so I did them as quickly as possible. Good luck!

I always screw it up. I guess I would say practice on something else first!

I heard it helps to paint the paint on their hands or feet instead of dipping it into paint.

This - practice one or two on paper first, so he knows what you expect him to do, and so you'll know if he's going to freak out about it.

Someone (on crafty moms I think?) mentioned putting LO in their high chair, in front of the tv for a good distraction.

We always paint with T in her high chair.

Painting the paint onto his hand, instead of dipping his hand in the paint, is very good advice.

And yes, definitely practice on something else first, so he can see what you're doing.

I think T and I are going to make footprint butterflies tonight for Mother's Day, like these:

  • We did hand/footprint flowers this morning! I love capturing their little hands and feet a few times a year to watch how they grow :)

I find it definitely works best if you paint a thin, even layer of paint on their hand instead of dipping, and foam brushes work really well. I also sit on the floor with them in my lap so we're both approaching the paper/canvass from the same angle. Easier for me to guide them and place the print where I want it.

If you are doing quite a few, you might want to spread it out. Do 2-3 when he's in a cooperative mood, then give him a break and do another 2-3 next time you catch him in a cooperative mood. I find if I try to do too many in a row they start looking sloppy because the girls get antsy. We did handprint ornaments for Christmas, 8 for each of the girls, and had to break it into 2 sessions to get clean prints.
