OB or PCP first?

Possibly stupid question but I've had hardly any sleep. I have congestion like whoa and my throat is on fire. Obviously I'm miserable when you add those on too of the pregnancy symptoms.

Has anyone called their PCP about possible illness during pregnancy? Can they even give me anything? Will they just refer me back to my OB and therefore I should just call the triage nurse first?

TIA. And PS this suuuuuucks.

Re: OB or PCP first?

  • I was crazy sick earlier in the pregnancy and my OB's office said to go to my primary for anything not pregnancy related.  My PCP did provide a pregnancy safe med to treat my symptoms.  Feel better!

  • You can do either but I always call my OB. They can prescribe zpacks etc, so I just go straight there.

  • I was in the same boat about 2 weeks ago. I called my OB first and she said to go ahead and call my PCP. However, I was in pretty rough shape at that point and my PCP couldn't get me in that day which my OB wasn't satisfied with. So, I ended up going to my OB and they wrote me a script. Like Meghan said, some PCP freak out about treating pregnant women. But, the issue I had wasn't really pregnancy related so my OB said she would prefer my PCP see me.

I always defer to OB during pregnancy.

Sorry you're sick, I am at the tail end of a wicked cold myself and feel your pain. Rest, hot liquids with honey, neti pot. Feel better!

congestion and sore throat may not warrent antibiotics. Try tea with honey. Thats the only thing that saved me during my preggo cold.

(well tea with organic honey, lemon, and fresh ground giner... but honey is a natural decongestant)... got this from my super holisitic aunt. seriously the only thing that could help me breathe.

  • My ob takes care of all matters during pregnancy. I'm sure it varies by the doctor but he is the one I call for issues, like a sinus infection.

  • I always call my OB first.  I usually talk to a nurse or one of the doctors, and then take it from there.

  • Last time I had a sinus infection I called my OB first and they told me to go to my PCP, then when I got a prescription I called my OB and got it ok'd by her too.

  • With my first pregnancy I got sick and went to my PCP who gave me antibiotics that were safe for my pregnancy.  I got well within the week.  Hope you start feeling better soon!
