Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Does your baby prefer jarred food over homemade?

All of a sudden, they want the jarred food (usually fruit) over the homemade stuff. I purree very fine, so I know for sure that texture is not the issue. They definitely prefer fruit over veggies, probably because of the sweetness but I'm having a really hard time getting them to eat their meals, unless is comes from a jar.

Any tips to get them to enjoy eating homemade foods? Veggies included! Thanks!

  • Mix it : she had the opposite problem for a while... All she wanted was my home made pears.. So I mixed then with everything...it became quite the joke.. Then she started eating anything and we stopped

I agree with this, mixing could help. I am surprised any living thing can enjoy jarred food more than homemade. It tastes like butt. Haha. I did only jarred food with DD1, and starting making some purees and freezing them for DD2, and I realize how much more homemade actually tastes like the food it claims to be. Baha.

  • My son really prefers jarred over homemade. He loves all the jarred veggies and LOVES peas, but if I make the peas he won't eat them. I pureed them with the baby bullet to oblivion, but still he prefers Gerber.

  • My LO is the same way. I started mixing two homemade veggies together and he will eat those. I think the flavor is a lot stronger with homemade so it might take some getting used to.

  • Yeah, I think these other ladies have given you some good advice. I am in the same boat as well. LO def prefers jarred food over homemade. The only homemade food that he likes better over the jarred is sweet potatoes.

  • My DS has only ever had homemade food, so we have never encountered this issue. But I would say mix in their favorite fruits or veggies, that always helps when DS doesn't prefer a meal. Also I often add breastmilk or formula to the mixture to make it a little thinner and it makes it a bit sweeter too.

Exactly. Either mix homemade with jarred or mix a sweet homemade -- like applesauce -- with homemade veggies. The homemade food has a much stronger taste.
