Talk to me about diaper yeast infections

Took DD to the doctor last Wednesday.  He "prescribed" OTC yeast meds that a woman would use for a vaginal yeast infection and some Minconazole  (sp?) for the itching/swelling.  The "rash" was only two really red spots when I took her in last week.  Well...the two really rawish red spots are fading finally thank the Lord but her whole diaper area is now slightly pink and raised despite frequent diaper changes and diligently applying the creams.  It's been like this for several days now. I would think the redness/swelling would be going away but it's the same light pink each time no matter what.  Only the darker spots are fading....  Tomorrow will be a week since I started treating it.  Sound normal?

  • Might be worth another trip to the pediatrician.  First though, I'd give her some bare butt time.  From my experience when DS got yeast, the dots are the yeast part.  The remaining pink part may just be an unhealed rash that needs some air. If it's not gone in a couple days, I would say that maybe you need a different round of yeast medication.

  • Yeah, a lot of naked time helps tremendously.

My pedi also suggested a baking soda bath with like a cup of vinegar. If nothing else it takes the pink away and kills the unstoppable screaming inconsolable itching at 2am. That actually worked better for us than a lot of things.

During the day we rotated Lotrimin with Monistat. Worked pretty well too.

I've always used Lotrimin for diaper yeast infections and it's worked wonderfully.

  • This is going to sound really odd....burnt flour. My son had a yeast infection when he was very young. It was in his diaper, armpits, neck crease. It was awful. We used prescription Nystatin cream and burnt flour. I browned it in a skillet. I still use burnt flour for his diaper rashes.
  • We've done a baking soda too.  4 tbsp in 4 inches of warm water for 10 minutes at least 2x/day.  With the cream we were told to mix diaper cream, hydrocortisone, and those other 2 ingredients you mentioned.  No onesies and loose diapers if you don't want to do naked time.  It took about a week before it looked fully healed.

  • We had something very similar. We tried creams, diaperless, etc. Finally the doctor recommended switching diaper brands. We switched from Huggies to Pampers and it cleared up in 2 days.
