LO Hitting

Has anyone else had to deal with their LO hitting? That little turd hit me this morning. It's the first time he's ever done it.

Colton bit me. I put him in time out.

Asher has started hitting recently. We say "no hitting" or "we do not hit" in a stern voice and he usually listens. If he does it again, he gets a 1 minute time out.

He smacked me in the face, I guess that's why I was surprised. His bad behavior is new to us so we need to establish some kind of time out too.

I think another thing that works for us is acting really shocked and disappointed.

I gasp (exaggerating) and I go "COLTON! NOOOOO BITING. YOU HURT MOMMY!"

I dunno how to stop it, I just tell him DON'T hit people! It hurts! Owie!
    I redirect.
He doesn't hit often. It's subsided a bit.

Everything that I have read about hitting and biting at this age is that it is a completely normal behavior and they aren't doing it to be mean...they are just learning.  Landon hits when he wants attention or will playfully bite.  I agree with others, he gets a warning once and then will get a 1 minute time out.

Yep, Logan is hitting too. We just sternly say no. Sometimes I grab his hand because he has a habit of doing it a few times in a row. He smiles and laughs while he does it so I know he isn't trying to be mean.

  • I say no, firmly, but not making a big deal about it, because I don't want it to become a game. Then I usually say "people don't want to play with people who hit" and I put her on the ground and do something else for about a minute or two.

Nolan's new thing is biting.  My pedi recommended a book "Teeth are not for Biting," which I got from Amazon.  I have been reading it a few times a day for about a week.  At first I didn't think it was helping, but today, instead of biting, I got kisses.  I'm not sure if it is the book or my constant redirecting him when he bites (or a little of both), but something is working.  I think that series has a book for hitting as well.

We have a hitter, but unlike most of you have said, he does it because he is MAD. I just say firmly, "NO, we do not hit." Then I usually have to hold his hand because he tries it 3 or 4 more times while screaming bloody murder. Then, if he's on the floor, his next step is to lean down and bang his head on the ground. I don't really have any advice. The good part is it's usually over quickly. I guess I prefer violent but short to long and drawn out.

DD has started grabbing my fingers and biting during diaper changes, in the middle of screaming and crying. Last week at daycare she wasn't getting the attention she wanted and went over to one of the babies and slapped him. She's definitely acting out in frustration. We do the redirect, say no ---ing, that hurts. I like what on PP said about telling them you don't like to play with people who hit.

I will say that DD used to attack the cats all the time, and after what seems like months of "no pulling, kiddo, be gentle with the kitty," I saw her actually petting the cat yesterday. He was purring. I was proud. Makes me hopeful that with consistent redirecting and messages, she'll figure it out.
