Babies: 9 - 12 Months

No formula after baby turns 1?

So I picked my son up from daycare yesterday and his provider was telling me about his day and had mentioned that once he turns one they can no longer give him formula.  She said they usually ask that the parents start transitioning about 2 weeks prior to turning one.  I knew that we were going to transition, but I was going to wait until his one year appointment and got his doctors recommendations for doing that at the time.  His appointment is about 2 weeks after his 1st birthday.  I guess I had never heard that daycares couldn't give babies formula once they turn one..have any of you heard of that?  I know I need to just ask them about it, but was in a hurry last night when I was picking him up so I didn't when she brought it up.  I guess I dont know that I want to start transitioning him to cow's milk in the next week and a half.  He doesn't turn one til June 4th.  Thoughts?

  • I find it interesting they control what your baby eats. I wouldn't transition till he turns 1, personally.

  • My son turns one June 6th and I don't plan on switching until close to then - maybe a week before or so. The daycare he is at (and the one my daughter went to) have NEVER told me that and if they did we would be having a discussion. It's not their decision its YOURS and I would tell them that! I would maybe talk to the director (or call if you want answers sooner than later) If you have any policy information from when you signed up check it out, but I really believe that this is not a standard at any daycare.

I've never heard of such a thing.  I'd speak to the director and tell her you don't plan on transitioning until after consulting with the ped at the 1yr checkup.  You should decide what your LO eats and drinks, not daycare.
  • I plan on doing what you're doing... waiting until my dr gives me the go and then transitioning.  Listen to what your dr says.  Your daycare should not dictate how you feed your baby.  What if you breastfed? Would they refuse to give them BM at age 1, too?  That's ridiculous.  I'd be speaking with a supervisor.

This is the only acceptable reason for what they said and even then, they should be telling you that they will no longer PROVIDE formula but they should still feed him whatever you're willing to give him.  They can't dictate when your child transitions so this would be a talk ASAP.  Hell, my friend's son has such bad allergies that at THREE, he still has to drink very particular formula to get his calories in.

That was my question too. DS's DC stopped providing his formula when he turned 1, but provided his WCM. Now that he's back on toddler formula for tummy issues, they provide it again, but only because it is at the urging of our pediatrician.

  • We provide his formula for him so I was surprised by what she had said.  I agree this would make sense if htey were purchasing his formula, but that isnt' the case.  I mean i'm all for not having to spend all that money in formula every month..but I'm also not willing to transition him until it's appropriate either...I'm definitely going to have to speak with them about it and get some clarification.  I just wasn't sure if there was something I was missing.

Gosh, they sound really demanding. I would probably wait until you get the go ahead from the doctor. I have heard of Mom's transitioning a little early, but I'm a FTM so I get a little apprehensive about all of that. Just go with your gut. It is your child so they should have to listen to your requests. If they don't agree then you might need to find a new DC.

Our center has to follow USDA rules so dictate much of what DD gets to eat, but they do still allow formula until 13 months.  My DD (11 months) got moved to a 12 month - 2 year classroom where they only offer WCM and table foods (of which she is currently not eating).  However because DD is still under 1 they can give her baby cereal and formula.  They can give her baby foods in a jar but both the teachers and I think that will only set her back when in a month she'll have to eat table foods (they do mash and cut everything).  They will continue to give her BM in a sippy if I decide to continue to pump.

That is not entirely true. They have to offer certain things but ultimately if the parent has special requests that can trump the USDA guidelines.

  • We have our daughter on Enfagrow toddler formula right now.

We will slowly transition her to milk.

With my son, he stayed in the infant room at daycare longer and transitioned to the toddler room more around 14 to 15 months.

It was actually easy to transition him-part formula, part milk, and then just milk.  It was more the transition from bottle to sippy cups that took longer.  And he really got finger food better at 14 to 15 months.

Daycare's that follow the food programs run by the state have VERY strict rules regarding what can be given and when. We actually left a DC because they insisted that my son start solids at 4 months. I spoke with the director and it had nothing to do with the DC policy but they were part of the food program that, in Colorado, requires all children to ahdere to insanely stict (and in my mind unsafe) consumption practices regardless of parental opinion. We left in a hurry and found a wonderful in-home day care that is so flexible. Unfortuantely, if you feel pretty strongly about it, I would recommend finding another place that is more focused on helping you parent than taking over that role.
  • A flip doesn't just switch the day your LO turns 1. I would just formula feed until LO turns 1 then cut down to whole milk at meals. If your LO still wants the occasional formula bottle it's ok. I'm surprised the daycare is giving you issues. Is your LO changing classrooms when he turns 1? Maybe in that classroom they don't offer bottles, which is dumb because they should be meeting each childs individual needs.
  • A few weeks either way won't matter a bit...anytime around 1yo you can start transitioning to WCM. Your Ped will just tell you to start offering milk. We already offer WCM to LO#2, just gave her a cup/sip every few meals (I still BF on demand).

I'd only be concerned if LO isn't eating a fair amount of calories each day in solid foods (since milk alone can no longer sustain their bodily needs). And I'd be annoyed that the daycare is dictating rules, regardless of their policy, or state guidelines.
