So DH was adamant that he did not want to cd. I have been talking it up for months, but he was never interested. Last night we went to our newborn care class and the teacher mentioned that they were cheaper something I have said 100 times and now DH is all pumped to cd. Boys!
So, I know there's a specific board that I will be checking out, but is wanted to ask the June moms I trust what brand do you like? How many do we need to start? Any other btdt advice? Thanks!!
Re: Cloth diapering late in the game
I'm new to CD this time around but this is what my stash currently looks like:
36 orange edge Green Mountain Diapers prefolds (these are supposed to be the best)
12 Real Nappies brand covers (can be purchased from Amazon, #1 brand in NZ and my sister who lives in AU said that is what all the hospitals use....I got a deal on Ebay so I went with them. I have way more than I need, I think most recommend 6 covers but like I said, I got a deal! They seem really nice).
2 Thirsties Duo size small (don't seem as nice as the Real nappies but I got them on Ebay in a lot when I first started thinking about CD)
12 Osocozy prefolds, size small
2 large wetbags
1 small wetbag
20 All in One one-size diapers (I think the weight recommendation is 10 pounds + on these). Various brands: Bumgenius, Alva and Kawaii
24 Microfiber inserts
I still want to pick up some hemp and bamboo inserts because they are supposed to be more absorbant but I figure that can wait until baby is a bit older.
Also, I have an HE top loader washer and plan on washing with original Tide.

And my favorite diaper creams are Grandma El's and Honest Company Healing Balm and I was with Rockin Green detergent.

You can end up waiting a lot of money. There are trial programs like Jillian's drawers.com for $10. I personally got some prefolds and newborn and xs covers(as pp gmds from greenmountaindiapers.com). I have 30 one size pockets (glowbugs- I love them and they are super cheap, but you have to buy them in bulk). I have been cloth diapering dd since she was about 6 months, we have a bit of everything but the pockets are what I prefer and I refuse to buy more because I just don't see it as money saving if I keep spending. It can be overwhelming that's why I think a trial program is a great idea.
Ok now let me tell you from experience, I hated the bulk on dd. I already told dh even though I have spent maybe $200 on diapers for #2 so far I'm not committed to it exclusively for the first few months mostly because of the bulk. I hated prefolds with my daughter but I did buy some with snappis for number 2.
Remember it doesn't have to be all or nothing you can do both till you are comfortable.

We are using:
Best Bottoms 10 micro fiber inserts, 9 hemp, 4 overnight doublers and 8 shells
Softbums 5 shells, 15 bamboo mini pods, 7 bamboo OS inserts
Bumgenuis Freetime 6 of those
Glad tour DH is on board! Mine was the one that insisted we cloth diaper at first and I was the hesitant one! Modern cloth diapers are sooo simple and easy!
For one size we will be using BumGenius 4.0. Look for sales and deals and buy used if possible. It saves a lot of money. Kawaii is having a sale of 20 percent off with coupon code "Happy Mother's Day" and Bum Genius 4.0 is having buy 5 get 1 free deal right now...
I would not commit to a brand or type of diaper. You can try out a diaper trial or what I did was buy 36 prefolds and 6 or so covers for the infant stage. I also got 3 different pocket diapers to try out, and a grovia with snap in inserts. I used all of the diapers, but after 12 weeks or so, I ended up buying 6 bumgenious. Which i loved. A friend gave me 12 fuzzibuns, I have a variety of pockets now, my DD is almost 3 and we still cloth diaper. I love it, and highly recommend it.
Most infants are too small for pockets, even if they are called "one-size."
Good luck!
Don't put all your eggs in one basket; meaning don't buy all one brand. Babies are shaped differently and different brands will work for different babies.
I put myself on a strict budget of 400 for the whole shpiel an ended up spending just over that, including all accessories and whatnot.
Newborn stash: 12 GMD newborn prefolds, 6 GMD small prefolds, 12 Osocozy small prefolds, 2 Bummis superbrite covers, 4 thirsties covers, pack of 3 snappis, 12 newborn aios/pockets in mixed brands [GroVia, Alva, Kawaii, bumGenius].

Also have 2 small wet bags for diaper bag [super cheap from Alva], 2 hanging wet bags for home, fleece liners, CD friendly diaper cream.
