3rd Trimester

Does dilation or effacement typically occur first? Or is there even a pattern to this?

At my 39 week visit, I was 50% effaced, and not dilated at all. My cervix is very soft. I know that dilatation isn't really an indication of how soon your labor will occur, but I was surprised.  I have been feeling so much pressure, that I was sure something was happening. Once I efface more, will I then start dilating? I'm not sure what the typical order of things is.

I know sex helps, but that is so not going to happen. I just don't feel like it.

  • For FTMs effacement usually occurs prior to dilation.

  • Effacement happens first.  And sex only helps if the time is right.  But sex is sucky and painful these days so sorry DH you're SOL.

  • I effaced first.  I remember shortly after, walking around for 2 weeks dilated 2cm and like 80% effaced.  Had to be induced b/c I was past our due date and nothing was happening.
