Does dilation or effacement typically occur first? Or is there even a pattern to this?

At my 39 week visit, I was 50% effaced, and not dilated at all. My cervix is very soft. I know that dilatation isn't really an indication of how soon your labor will occur, but I was surprised. I have been feeling so much pressure, that I was sure something was happening. Once I efface more, will I then start dilating? I'm not sure what the typical order of things is.

I know sex helps, but that is so not going to happen. I just don't feel like it.

For FTMs effacement usually occurs prior to dilation.

Effacement happens first. And sex only helps if the time is right. But sex is sucky and painful these days so sorry DH you're SOL.

I effaced first. I remember shortly after, walking around for 2 weeks dilated 2cm and like 80% effaced. Had to be induced b/c I was past our due date and nothing was happening.
