VBAC

Anyone pursued pre-natal chiropractic care?

I keep reading about Chiropractic care.  I had always heard of using it for a breech baby, but I've started to read more about it and it looks like it's overall good for positioning, among other things.  They say it often reduces labor time and need for pain meds.  Does anyone have any experience?  It makes sense to me, I just can't decide if I want to pursue it.

Re: Anyone pursued pre-natal chiropractic care?

  • I saw a chiropractor regularly throughout my entire VBAC pregnancy.  I have back problems in general and had been seeing her before getting pg.  My CS baby was very poorly positioned, which I am certain is what ultimately lead to the CS.  I obviously can't tell you if the chiropractic care specifically lead to any of these things but my VBAC birth was fairly fast (5 hours from water breaking to birth), he was almost perfectly positioned and I had a completely med free hospital water birth.  I think a lot of things lead to this outcome and chiropractic care was certainly one of them.

  • Yep, I saw one for a good 2/3 of my VBAC pg also. I am a pretty big skeptic when it comes to chiropractics, but our insurance covered most of it, so I decided to do it. I had sciatica with DS1, but it wasn't as bad with DS2. Though, I also was more physically active my second pg. At any rate, DS2 was very well-positioned at birth, FWIW.

Find someone who specializes in the Webster Technique, and I also think it's a good idea to find a friend who can recommend one, too.

  • I am seeing one this pregnancy.  Many of the women in my ICAN chapter felt it was a key to their VBAC success, and I am making sure I do everything in my power to be successful!  I have enjoyed it so far.  I see a chiro that practices non-force techniques and is Webster certified.  Its like a nice massage and so far I haven't had too many aches and pains.
  • I've been seeing my chiro since around 20 weeks. He was able to flip my breech baby, and now baby's positioning is perfect. He is specialized in Webster and has been wonderful! I always feel great when I go to him. :) I would recommend using a chiro in all pregnancies!
  • Thanks ladies, this really helps.

Next question, is finding a Webster certified really that important?  What about just a chiro who treats pregnancy?  I just talked to a Webster certified office today and set up a consultation, but they are out of network, so cost maybe a factor.  There's a place down the street who's not Webster certified, but they are in network.  Is there really that much of a difference?

  • The chiropractor I use is not Webster certified but my DS was not breech at any point.  My concern was that my older DS was face up and I wanted to avoid that if possible.  The woman I use has a lot of experience working with pregnant women in general and had three all natural (one breech and two at home) births herself.
  • I saw an excellent chiro for my VBAC. I'll be going back later in this pregnancy too. I go for pelvic pain, but an added benefit was good pelvic alignment for a smooth birth. My labor and birth with my VBAC baby was 2 hours.
  • I did everything under the sun to get my VBAC, so I don't know which technique I can thank for my success.  However, I loved getting adjusted because it really helped with the back pain.  If your insurance covers it, I recommend going.

i have been seeing a chiropractor for almost 6 years now.  I saw my chiro my entire pregnancy with DS which ended with a c-section so obviously that didn't help in that situation.  I'm stiill seeing my chiro now so who knows if seeing them will help lead me to a VBAC.  Once I get closer to my due date, I will sit down and discuss with my chiro what happened during my first pregnancy and if he thinks there is anything he could do differently (first pregnancy was with a different chiro).

I go to a chiropractor that has multiple locations and has a few Webster certified chiros so if this baby is breech at all, I will probably go to that chiro a few times to help flip baby.

  • I have been going to the chiro since week 8 and I truly believe she has helped make my pregnancy go so smooth. I highly recommend it

  • Ive been going to a Webster Certified chiropractor since I was about 20 weeks.

I have been to both a webster and ordinary run of the mill chiro and I would suggest a webster certified if you can fine one. They are a lot gentler as there is no torquing your lower back so you do not have the strain on your front. They also work the ligaments in front and help loosen them.
