Keeping kids cool in cars

My DS is still rear facing in his car seat.  Our vehicles do not have vents in the back seat. I put sun shades up when we're parked, we also cover the car seat to keep it cooler. I have limo tint windows in the back. We also point the middle vents toward the roof in hopes the air will bounce off the ceiling and get to DS better.  I still feel like he's too hot in the back, especially when the temps get over 100 every day.  Our next vehicle will definitely have rear air vents, but until then... Does anyone have tricks that help keep your kiddos cooler in summer months?

  • Our car is the same way.  I've sat back there before and it gets hot, even with the a/c on.  I bought a cheap battery operated fan at Walmart last summer and attached it to the back head rest.  I have my qualms about it due to it posing as a safety hazard in a wreck, but it's better than my kid roasting all summer long.  I'm going to put it on the back of the passenger head rest this year instead I think so that it still moves air that direction, but will be less likely to land on their faces if I'm in a wreck.  I also made carseat covers this year that hold ice packs to keep their seats cool while we are in the store, so maybe their seat will stay cooler even after they are in it.

  • Our car was the same way and it felt like I was torturing my child so we flipped her. I live in CA and summers are hot and there was no way she could ride RF any longer.

I agree with this. Probably the easiest way to get some more of that a/c blowing on them is to flip them.

  • I live in south florida and my car when my first daughter was born did not have rear vents either.  Make sure the circulator is on too, which helps the AC get cooler.  Make sure you have back sunshades as well as sunshades on all of the rear windows.  I didn't take my daughter out in the heat of the day when rear facing.  just couldn't. Now I have a minivan with AC all over and it soooo much better.

I just turn on the air before buckling them in and use sunshades.  I'll roll down the windows a bit to vent the hot air once I start driving if it's really hot (and I'm in the humid South). Honestly though, while it may be hot, it's not going to hurt them and in fact, my kids have never complained.  Cars didn't have AC at all back in the day ;)

Pretty much this. DD1 was RFing until 2y9m, and if she had been too hot that last summer she would have complained. Loudly, LOL. If I can run the car a few minutes before getting in I will, but generally we just blast the air until it cools down and dress the girls as lightly as possible.

  • DD's first year we lived in Arizona.  It got up to 120 during the summer.  DD did fine.  I would turn the car on for like 10 mins before putting her in if home. If we were out, I'd just blast the air and she was fine.  We definitely had all sorts of sun shades up so no sun hit her at all.

  • I dont have vents in the back either. I just point all four vents straight back so they are not on me and pointed in the back and leave the ac on high when its too hot.
