2nd Trimester

Slow urine flow

Hi ladies. I am 17 weeks 5 days pregnant. I am going to my prenatal appointment on Tuesday... Maybe before that, if I can get in to see the doctor sooner, but I'd thought I would ask for your thoughts. Last week, I woke up around 4 AM to pee, and I felt like I really needed to go. When I urinated, it seemed like it took forever, and that the urine was coming out slower. I didn't think much of it until it happened again. It seems to happen about once a day and when I strongly feel the urge to go. I thought maybe it is a UTI, especially because I've had one before, but this time it's different. When I urinate, it doesn't burn or hurt in anyway; it just simply seems more difficult. I've read online that it may be how to baby's positioned, but I'm not sure if I believe that because its only the size of an onion right now. Any ideas?

Re: Slow urine flow

  • This happens to me as we'll, and it is usually at 3-4am when I just want to hurry up and go to bed!!

I have a completely different problem. My pee gushes and it seems to be aimed more forward but only in the middle of the night, but I have noticed if I don't sit a certain way it will hit the toilet seat and spray all over the floor.

Anyway. While you are laying down gravity will slightly lower your organs, and can position the baby in such a way that the pressure put on the bladder will cause your pee to come out weird. I would not worry about it, and if it bothers you try sleeping in a different position and see if it helps.

It can be totally normal in pregnacy, baby's position can affect it or you may be feeling the need to go when your bladder is fairly empty due to your uterus putting pressure on it. However, UTI's are common in pregnancy and can sometimes be unsyptomatic and you won't feel any pain or discomfort. Your doctor will want to check a sample to make sure.

thanks for your input. I will be sure to test for a UTI when I see my doctor. I always relieve a substantial amount of urine. What's bothersome is the fact that it is not a very fulfilling feeling because it comes out slower. Sometimes, it's as if I strain to get more of a flow. Is just so bizarre. I've never experienced something like this before.

  • This happens to me all the time too, doc said it was normal and had to do with baby's positioning. I wouldn't worry too much, but definetly get a UTI test

  • This actually happened to me as well. I was noticing that for a couple of weeks my urine was definitely different-not coming out in a steady stream. I was almost pushing it out sometimes. I had no other symptoms at all. Dr. tested my urine at 18 week appt and turns out I have an asymptomatic UTI. Luckily they caught it and I am on Macrobid.
  • Lean forward as far as your belly will let you. It might help.

Get checked for UTI. Those are sneaky little buggers.
