Lunch box help please

I have to register my son for kinder tomorrow and I am trying to get started on buying what he will need.  We just found him a backpack and now I'm working on the right lunch box.  It has to fit IN his backpack (per the school) and I think I need to find something that has two areas - one for hot stuff one for cold.  My son hates sandwiches, etc. and we send leftovers at least 3 times a week.  Other days he wants a hot dog, etc. so he needs stuff to be hot.

They of course can't heat it for him so I will send what I can in a thermos (although I don't see how that doesn't make a perfect breeding ground for bacteria but I digress).  So I was thinking of finding a lunch box with an area for cold stuff and one that has an area for a thermos so it doesn't get cold due to the ice pack.

Any ideas?  I looked at our local Walmart and Target and didn't find anything.  I haven't checked Pottery Barn Kids lately but will look into that as well.  Thought someone might have suggestions.  Thanks.

Re: Lunch box help please

  • You are way to early to shop for school supplies for the fall.  If you wait until July/August, Target and I'm sure all the other stores as well, will have tons and tons and tons of school supplies in all shapes and sizes.  My girls have lunch bags that have the main part (big) and a smaller part on the bottom.  I can fit a small thermos into the main part and an ice pack with something cold in the bottom if needed.  I often will freeze a gogurt and then it keeps everything cool until lunch time and its defrosted enough so she can eat it then as well.

  • DS has a Lands End lunch box that has held up really well.  It does not have two compartments but if you get a nice insulated thermos it will not matter.  I can put a cold pack in his lunch box for cold stuff and the food in his thermos stays hot.  As far as two-compartment lunch boxes I don't have a recommendation.

  • Ditto first reply.  You will find a MUCH larger selection of school items at lower prices if you wait until after June 30 to shop.

For a kindergartner, I would get the simplest lunch system with the fewest parts that meets his needs.  Lunch at my kids' school is pretty short; the kids have to eat, pack up, and line up really quickly.  When my kids were in primary grades, I packed their sandwiches and snacks in disposable bags and sent plasticware, so that they didn't have to bring back anything but the lunchbox.

My son also has a backpack and a lunch bag from Land's End, and they've held up very well.  However, his lunch is room temp, so I'm not sending a thermal container inside the lunchbox.

  • My son goes to daycare now so this would be something I would like to get him used to before he starts kinder.  And I don't like sending him stuff to be thrown away all the time.  We use kid size utensils and reusable bags and he has never thrown it away.  He is slightly ocd about stuff like that so I am not worried.  And he is already used to eating in less than 25 minutes as that is what they do in the 4 year old room he is in at daycare.  They are helping him transition so he does great.  I will check Lands End thank you.

  • We use this lunch box (got it at Target, I think):

Or this one (got it at Kmart or Sears).

It depends on what she needs to bring for hot and cold. I have a sandwich-hater, too, and it's TOUGH packing lunches since she can't head anything up at school.

But let him have a say or you will be buying more in the fall!

  • My kids' school has a boomerang policy meaning anything they bring to school comes home with them.  So a good, reusable thermos, sandwich keeper, containers for fruit, etc. are a must.

I pack their drinks with ice which keeps the soft-sided bag cool inside and if I send a hot main course, it is pack inside a small thermos.  The thermos will not get cold - that is the point of a thermos.
