Losing weight while BFing?

On Wednesday I'll be 12 weeks pp and I would like to try to lose weight. I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight, but it is an unhealthy amount (I'm 5' and weight 185). I BF though and know that dieting/exercising can play with your production. Do any of you have experience trying to lose weight while BFing? Did it affect your supply?

DD just turned 4 months old, and for the past 2 months, I have been using the my fitness pal app to count calories to lose weight. I aim for 1700 calories/day. 1200 calories is the least amount it will allow you to have plus 500 calories for breastfeeding. I have read that you should not drop below 1700 calories if you are breastfeeding. I lost 2-3 pounds a week the first month, and now I have been losing a half to a full pound a week. It is very slow, but everything I read says that slow and steady is best :)  You could try eating 1900 calories a day and watch your supply. If it drops, increase calories, if not, you could try a little lower. Everyone is different, so I can't promise what is working for me will work for you, but I hope this helps :) I gained 56 pounds with pregnancy, and I only have 6 of those left...My eating habits were the problem!  :)Smile

  • I've been doing the weight watchers plan and including nursing points for a while now. I've fallen off the wagon a few times but the weeks that I am good I've lost between 12lbs/week and my supply hasn't suffered.
