Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Night care for 6 month old w/cold

So LO had a mild cold. No fever not lethargic, but pretty miserable w/ runny congested nose/teething.

She currently sleeps in her room yesterday when she was crying I just kept going in there clearing her nose, giving tempra when needed and fed her, cuddled etc. It took forever for her to settle down my hubby wanted me to bring her to our bed. I didn't do it though only because I'm afraid she'll get too used to it will have to have naps etc sleeping w/ me I have a 3 yo to take care of too. I also don't want to get in the habit of feeding her to sleep when i know she's not hungry because I did that when she was sick a few months ago she ended up using my boob as a pacifier.

So my question is when your LOs are sick how do you care for them at night...or get them back to sleep?

Re: Night care for 6 month old w/cold

  • Have you tried using a vaporizer yet or elevating the head of the crib? Our vaporizer makes it much easier for her to breathe. Have you also tried putting a few drops of saline in each nostril before suctioning? That really thins the mucus and makes it easier to suck it out or to swallow it.

  • We've put a blanket under the mattress to elevate it slightly, used a humidifier and made sure to suction his nose before every feeding.

Try Vicks baby tub on the bottom of LO's feet then put socks over it. Helps clear up their noses.

  • All of the above... plus, talk to your pediatrician... your baby should be old enough for a decongestant/cough syrup now.  Ours gave us a prescription for one and it helped a lot during my daughter's last cold.

My son caught a cold from me when he was 4 months old.

We did cool mist humidifier, baby vicks on feet, saline and nose suction.

He sleeps alone is his crib, but when he woke up sick I'd bring him to bed with me. I felt like he needed the extra mommy time to feel better. Now that he isn't sick he is back to sleeping through the night and not in bed with us.  I wasn't too scared about him getting used to sleeping with us. We've randomly let him sleep with us since he was a newborn and he never got used to it.

Babies should not be taking any kind of decongestant. My 3 year old can't even take one.

  • I had called the pedi about Vicks at one point and she does NOT recommend it. Even the baby Vicks can be dangerous apparently.

This. Babies most definitely should not be taking cough medicine.

Well, we have a prescription from my baby's pediatrician for one.  I highly doubt she would prescribe something for my daughter that my daughter cannot safely take.  No offense to anyone, but I trust her doctor more than internet strangers.  Also, all of the prescribing information I can find on that particular medicine says that it can be used after 6 months.  We have not had any issues with the medicine, other than actually getting my daughter to take it.  I wouldn't recommend just going to the store and buying a decongestant or cough syrup, but it's definitely worth talking to your doctor about.
