Iron Deficiency

Got my glucose test & blood results back today.  Sugar levels are good!  But turns out I am iron deficient.  I have heard this is common among pregnant women.  So now I am on some pills to help.

I guess I can kiss my regular BM's goodbye!  LOL.  Finally got that back on track, but these pills will do a number on my digestive system and screw me all up again.

Oh and for those of you suffering from nosebleeds & leg cramps (I have previously posted about both) it turns out that iron deficiency causes both those things!!

Re: Iron Deficiency

  • interesting about the nosebleeds. I haven't had a bad one in a few months, but I eat lots of spinach, eggs, beans, etc.

I've had a few leg cramps on an off though.

  • Same thing here. Taking iron and fiber. Iron for the anemia and fiber for the the effects of the iron.
  • I get my results on Friday and I have a good feeling she'll tell me the same thing. I've had such a hard time with being tired and exhausted all the time so I'm betting in iron issues too.

In the same boat. No gest diabetes but low iron. I'm not anemic but getting close. Ive been experiencing leg cramps as well, totally sucks.

My midwife made sure to recommend taking chelated iron, NOT ferrous sulfate. Chelated iron is said to be easier on the digestive track, and not cause as much constipation issues. However, we also take calcium magnesium liquid which helps tremendously with staying regular. They started this when I started complaining of leg cramps. I would ask your Dr about this.

Do they routinely check iron with the glucose challenge test?  I didn't ask my OB about this but I did the test yesterday.  I do have leg cramps and nose bleeds so now I'm wondering.  You are Canadian right? (I ask b/c testing guidelines seems to be different.  I'm from Ontario).

I know the question wasn't directed at me. We are not in Canada. But my midwife does the same blood test as she did around 1012 weeks in the first trimester to make sure all is well, and to use it as a measurement to compare to my blood test results from 2628 weeks when she did my glucose screen. Most pregnant women find themselves with lower iron levels at this time from the increase blood flow and its an easy fix to prescribe iron supplements if the levels are low. Your doctor may of tested for them but didn't say anything because of it being in the normal range??

Thanks!   She actually wouldn't get the results until today or tomorrow and said she'd call only if there was a problem.  So if I don't hear from her I'll just ask at my next appt. if it included an iron test.

  • I had the same thing happen to me.. glucose test was fine, but I had very low iron levels. She had actually already told me she expected this to be the case, so I wasn't surprised. She put me on a prescription iron supplement that has a stool softener in it to help with the constipation. I have had digestive issues for years and already eat yogurt everyday, so she said the prescription form of iron supplement would be best for me. You may want to ask your doctor about a prescription option..

I didn't know about the leg cramps, but mine have gotten better, so that may explain it!
