Reflux mommas...

As a reflux momma, I was growing increasingly frustrated with DS spitting out the minty Zantac.  As he was ingesting less, obviously the discomfort associated with reflux was coming back with a vengeance.  When I called our pedi last week and told him it was no longer working (DS wasn't having any of it), he advised that the AAP had just come out with new guidelines regarding the diagnosis and treatment of reflux/GERD.  He said he wasn't surprised that he wasn't tolerated the mint any more.  We've since switched to generic Axid (Nizatidine) and I can't believe how much he likes the flavor!  My research said it was bubble gum flavored, but the pharmacist asked what flavor I wanted.  Somehow I ended up with a grape and bubble gum flavor that smells pretty good.

Two things I've learned from this process: 1) I get my scripts filled at Target as they put them in bottles that have the diaphragm adapter for oral syringes so all you have to do is invert the bottle instead of fishing around the bottom of the bottle with a syringe and straw extender (our other pharmacy options suck), and 2)when trying out a flavor, ask for only a half fill of the script so in case LO doesn't care for the flavor, you can always get the remainder filled with a new flavor to try.

Does anyone else have any tips or suggestions they could share? Big Smile

My 4 month old DD is on Zantac since she was 2 months old...At first she would spit it back out but she's gotten better.  We only give it to her when she has her morning and evening bottle and we do half the dose at a time.  My husband gives her half and I give her the bottle right after so when she goes to drink she swallows the medicine too.  Then let her eat a minute before giving her the other half.

I love the idea of just tipping over the bottle to get what's at the bottom. The pharmacy only has this tiny syringe(with no extender!) so that we have to pour out the little bit at the end into another container so we can get it!

  • thats awesome that target does that. i may have to switch it over to there! LOs doc said monday she wanted to take him off the meds to see if he has outgrown the reflux at all. and OMG not at all!! i had to call today and tell them that he needed to be back on his medication asap! hes been spitting up that clear stomach acid and he is just soo unconfortable.

his med that he is on he doesnt like the flavor of it. at first it was just a  minty flavor and he would just spit it out. now they flavor it with grape.... he still doesnt like it.. but its better then no flavor!
