WTF is this!

I previously noticed a red bump on my inner thigh. It was about the size of a pea.. I assumed it was an ingrown hair or irritation from my now giant thighs touching.

But I just got out of the shower and it's now purple with a big purple bruise around it and I'm panicking.

I e-mailed my MW about it and I'm waiting for a response.

Any thoughts to what it could be??

Re: WTF is this!

  • Probably way to obvious but spider bite? That's the only thing I've had that sounds similar.

    This. Keep us posted!
  • I have gotten similar things that are like pimples or ingrown hairs but are filled with blood so it is purplish. Sometimes they get painful that I have had doctor drain it but I have drained them myself but I did not drain myself until I knew from doc it wasn't anything dangerous.

I live in Canada and up until last week there was snow on the ground so I don't think it was a spider. Dr. Google is scaring the crap out of me right now. It looks like a purple nipple. Ahhh.

This. I get them all the time, it's from sweat and chafing. They are not fun, but not dangerous. I'd be shocked if your MW said it was anything other than an infected hair follicle, but since it's the first time you're having one its def good to get a professional opinion.

FWIW, for me they usually swell up and get painful, but then get mostly re absorbed once my hormones calm back down. Mine are worst during my period, and have come and gone a few times since being pregnant.

And they have a bruise around them?

Thanks so much for your responses, I feel a lot more relieved.

This sounds like an abscess, also called furuncles and boils. They often look like spider bites, but typically aren't. Use a warm washcloth to apply heat to it, which can bring it to a head to drain, but not too hot. Or sometimes a warm soak in the shower or tub will do it. Most important though talk to your OB or MW, as they'll likely want to see it and possibly drain it, and possibly start antibiotics. And of course, this could all be incorrect, so again see what your MW says. Hope it resolves quickly!

All of this.  I get these, too.   A little annoying (especially depending on the location), but not really a huge deal.

The warm washcloth trick really helps... but as PP mentioned, you should talk to your OB, MW or GP to see if they feel it's serious enough to need draining, and to ensure that's what's really going on.

This exactly. I would still run it by your doc.

This.  It happened to me on my left knee. Started out as an irritated hair follicle and within 4 days I had a hole the size of the head of a q-tip. Hopefully your MW has you get checked. MRSA is no fun.

I have a couple of ideas. Sometimes I get a pimple on my thighs, and when I try to squeeze it but it doesn't pop, it gets a bruise underneath it from squeezing so hard. Did you squeeze it when you first found it? The other idea is a tick bite. Sometimes the ticks fall off before you find them but leave a mark.

Yup, they bruise and hurt like crazy, especially if you try and pop them and they don't pop. Then they get ANGRY. As others have said, MRSA can be an issue as well, so be sure to talk to your Dr/MW/health professional, but don't let your imagination get the best of you. It'll be ok, is easily treatable, and is not uncommon.
