Mrs.Jade and other environmental people

We have a tree that has branching that are lying on our roof top. The branches are slowly damaging the roof. Within the next few weeks DH and one of his friends are going to cut all of these branches. There are several, like 5 ish bird nests in this tree. I feel bad chopping us these bird's homes but seriously, the branches have got to go.

Is there anything I can do with the nests? Should we set them on the ground or move them to another spot in the tree before we chop. Obviously we'd have to wear gloves (I say we but I mean DH LOL) but is there any other thing we need to do to avoid bird germs haha? Am I being totally ridiculous and over thinking this? Give it to me straight.

    I have a few questions;

    1. Are there even birds in the nests?

    2. Where are you located? Here in LA most of the baby birds are already getting ready to leave the nest because they were born in early spring.

    3. Do you feel comfortable relocating the nests to another part of the tree?

    4. Does your local animal control or rescue work with birds and nests?

    1. Are there even birds in the nests? There are birds in the nests. I don't know if they're in all of the nests but I have seen them hanging out in the nests from time to time. I don't know if there are any eggs right now.

    2. Where are you located? Here in LA most of the baby birds are already getting ready to leave the nest because they were born in early spring. I'm in Iowa. I haven't seen any baby birds but honestly I haven't paid that much attention. I just notices the huge amount of nests in this tree.

    3. Do you feel comfortable relocating the nests to another part of the tree?DH will totally do that if I ask him to. I was just worried about the birds no longer wanting the nests after being handled...I dunno...

    4. Does your local animal control or rescue work with birds and nests?We have police officers that deal with lose dogs and cats LOL We have no real animal control around here. There is a "nature park" in a neighboring state but I doubt they would come here.

    Ok. So my first suggestion would be to wait as long as possible for the birds to leave. My guess is that the branches have been a problem for a while and a few more weeks may not matter to your roof, but could be life or death to the birds.

    If you absolutely have to cut the branches immediately, I would try find someone who is an expert to move the nests. Try googling your local Audubon Society or a bird watching club nearby.

    Last resort is to move the nests yourself - (yes, use latex gloves), but understand that chances are low that they will survive.

    I hope that helps!

  • Oh Woodsie that's terrible :(

    Thanks for the information Ms.Jade. I think it will probably still be a couple of weeks before the branches go.

    Also, sorry it took so long for me to respond. I was out of town yesterday. Thanks again!
