Trouble TTC

2nd opinions...

How many of you ladies have had second opinions? If you got one, was it worth it?

We've been with one RE for 2.5 years and I'm starting to wonder if it would benefit us to see a different doctor for a second opinion. We're coming off our 5th failed IUI and we just feel like it might be smart to talk to someone else before we move forward with anything else. I have several minor problems (mild hormone issues, one spot of endometriosis etc.) but we have never really been able to identify the cause of our inability to get pregnant. Maybe this is just be grasping at straws, who knows. Just curious if anyone else has done it!

I'd definitely look into a 2nd opinion- you need to be 100% confident with your doctor and their treatment plan, and you're not there right now. No harm in seeking for further advice

  • 2nd opinions are a must if your gut is telling you so.  When I first addressed the pain on my left side of my stomach, my obgyn who I had been going to for 6+ years, told me it was nothing and gave me antibiotics.  But the pain got worse, and she kept telling me to relax and that it was nothing.  Come to find out--- it was paratubal disease and I had to get my left tube taken out because a large cyst had grown through the wall of my tube and I was experiencing torsion (the twisting of the fallopian tube, which is excruciatingly painful).  If I hadn't had listened to my gut and gotten a second opinion, I could have had serious, even worse results.  Listen to your gut and seek out a 2nd opinion.

  • We did get a 2nd opinion when I started to doubt my current RE.  It helped me trust her a little more having something to compare to.  I encourage you to get another opinion so you don't have to wonder what if.

  • I got a second opinion and I was so glad I did. I would have had unnecessary surgery otherwise. My RE's office was kind enough to even fax all my records over so the new RE had all that to look at.

I ended up deciding to stay with the first RE, but what I learned from the other RE was invaluable. My first RE welcomed me back with no questions asked and we just moved right ahead with treatment.

  • that is so weird that you right this, my husband mentioned a second opinion last night. We are only in our 3rd month with the RE so I think he is jumping too soon, but looks like if this is not the month I will also be going for a second opinion.

I'm also glad that I got a second opinion, because my first RE failed to identify my need for surgery, so kind of opposite from Cara! It can't hurt, I say go for it.

  • Thanks for your input ladies! I guess I'm leaning towards getting a second opinion. It's silly, but I feel like I'm "cheating" on my RE, he's such a nice guy and I believe he wants the best for us, but in some areas I just don't feel satisfied with my level of care there. I think that a fresh set of eyes might do us some good. I appreciate your input!
