I have it and love it. I've never gotten a period (minus initial bleeding), didn't gain any weight, feel awesome, and I love not having to go to the pharmacy every month. Also, my insurance covered it 100% so that was nice. I plan to get it again after the next LO.
I had it for 3 years before we tried to get pregnant and loved it then. I didn't have any side effects. When I was on BC pills, I had bad migraines and mood swings but that all went away when I got the Mirena. After I had the baby, I got another inserted, and again, it's been great. No problems or side effects.
You will find horror stories about ALL kinds of birth control on the internet, even BC pills. Just talk to your doctor and figure out what will be best for you.
The things I like about Mirena are that it last for 5 years, I don't have to take a pill every day or get a shot whenever. Basically it's inserted and I don't have to worry about it again for 5 years. And there aren't the hormonal side effects for me like with other forms of BC.
I didn't have a great experience with it. I didn't think the placement of it was that bad, but once it was in I had constant period like cramps. I only had my period for about 2 months after it was placed and then stopped getting it which is normal, but the cramps were almost worse. I had mine pre-baby though which I have heard that can make a difference. I also gained quite a bit of weight while on it, which I dont think is normal since the amount of hormones in it are quite a bit less than the pill or other forms of bc. A lot of it was actually water that I was retaining. I ended up getting it taken out after about 8 months because I couldn't stand the cramping anymore. Once it was out I felt an immediate difference with cramping and even with how my pants fit from the time I walked in and walked out of the clinic. Again, probably not the norm. I got my period back 3 days after getting mirena removed and some scary bleeding...I was told I would probably have some spotting, but this bleeding was very similar to what my first period was like after having my son...since i had not had any children at that point I was super freaked out...I dont know if my experience would be any different post baby..but I'm not going to try it to find out.
I love mine. Insertion was fine, I had cramping and light spotting for a couple of days afterward. I don't know if it was the trigger or just a coincidence, but I got my first postpartum period the following week. I had two more periods and now it's been two months since I've had one. I love not trying to remember to take a pill at the same time every morning (so hard with the baby). My husband occasionally feels the strings, but they're getting softer and he says they don't really bother him.
I waited until my insurance covered it under the ACA, and am glad I did - it's about $1000 for the device and insertion. I paid nothing out of pocket.
I'm on my second Mirena. I had the first for 4years before we decided to have DD. I had a bad experience with the insertion, but I was fine by the following day. I had no periods after about 3 months. This time I got a shot of Toradol just in case I had a reaction with the insertion and it was no problem. I cramped for a couple of hours but that's it. I spotted off and on for a few weeks but no bleeding or cramping since then got it at 8w PP. I love it.

I had it placed after my second LO. The bleeding never stopped, so I went back to my OB. It was placed fine, but it moved. So, I could've gotten pregnant. They had to remove it. My OB said that sometimes the Mirena will move for some women who had breech babies. Something about the way the uterus is shaped.
Love mine. No pain with insertion, DH can't feel the strings during sex anymore, and after spotting for the 1st 2 months (which is normal), my periods are shorter and lighter than before.
I had to get mine removed two years early. It was great for the first two years and then I started having side effects like crazy. Two friends have "birthed" theirs, one has it implanted and will probably need surgery, and several friends love it! Depends on the person like everything else.
I have no personal experience with Mirena, but I know someone who got pregnant with it. Granted I don't know the details, so it's possible the placement was bad/moved, but either way, it obviously didn't work for her.
Only waiting on my hub's vasectomy next month to get mine out. It grew into the wall, never even lightened my period, and I think I am REALLY lucky to not be pregnant right now.
Gained weight, major cravings- I am relieved to be getting it out.
I think it's all on what you and your doc decide what's best for you. But my personal experience with it totally stunk! I never stopped bleeding, had worse cramps, low back aches, gained as much weight as I had when I was pg, moody constantly, I think it caused me to be on PPD meds. I was so happy to get it taken out. I feel like a completely different person. I also had a friend who had it taken out because she had a slightly tilted uterus. Her doc said that she was lucky she had it taken out because it would have implanted and she could have become pg. But like I said that's just our situations. You could be totally fine.
