Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Teething Opinions?

Our DD will be 5 months on the 17th. At her 4 month checkup her Pediatrician stated she was teething because of the drooping, runny diapers, chewing on everything non stop, etc but did not reccomend or approve teething tablets, tylenol, or baby orajel even though she is extremely fussy (if I pull my hand away from her mouth while she is chewing and sucking on it, she has a fit). Her Pediatrician simply said cold wash rags and teething toys are sufficient.

I know every pediatrician is different and every mom makes their own call, but I curious if anyone is using teething tablets, baby orajel, or tylenol without the "OK" from you pediatrician? I feel like I am letting her "suffer" and be "cranky" because of her teeth. I have read the pros and cons but I wanted to see other mom's thoughts as well.

Thanks!!

Re: Teething Opinions?

  • We only use Tylenol/Ibuprofen when teething also causes her temp to go up or if she can't sleep. Our ped okay'ed Tylenol Ibuprofen once she got older.

  • We asked pedi for a recommendation on dosage of Tylenol for teething.  We did not ask about teething tablets, and those have proven to be helpful to us.

  • We used Tylenol 4x over the course of two bottom teeth coming in. I'm not a fan of giving medication to kids, but there were days he was really miserable. We basically only gave it when he just seemed like he was at his wits end.

I didn't used Oragel or Teething tablets. Oragel has a warning which scared me and the teething tablets were recalled by the FDA because of varying doses of Belladonna. Belladonna can be deadly. Obviously not in the doses that are on the box, but the varying doses scared me.

He really did/does love cold wash cloths and chewing his blankets.

I've heard teething necklaces work really well, but never tried them. He is teething again with his two front teeth and is dealing much better.

  • I wouldn't use orajel. There was a huge thing about it causing babies to go into shock or something. Ill look for the article. Any numbing agent was causing it.
My lo has been teething for weeks and likes cold/warm wash clothes, blankies, teethers in the fridge and my fingers loo

We use teething tablets first, which normally help, and then use Tylenol as a last resort. Here is a helpful link to explain the recall of the teething tablets: https://www.mommymadegreen.com/hylands-teething-tablets-recall-education-repost/

We were specifically told not to use orajel as there had been some infant deaths from it and that it wasnt worth the risk.

We did get the ok for tylenol though

  • Dd has been teething for about a month. You can see where the teeth want to come in, but it isn't happening. There's only been one time we've used Tylenol, she was frantically chewing her paci, she doesn't usually like one, rubbing her ears, red cheeks, fussy, couldn't sleep. She was loads better after we gave it and slept, finally. She hasn't been that bad again, close, but not quite. She wears an amber teething bracelet on her ankle, that might be helping. I'm not comfortable giving her orajel or tablets. I did once with DS and he kept gagging, scared me to death. She likes her yet thing ring, chewing on her blanket, a finger, or a wash cloth.

  • I definitely don't get my OK from my pedi if I want to use any of those items. I make the judgement call for when it's appropriate. I think it's kind of silly how dependent some parents are on what their pediatrician says. If you feel like your baby is sore from teething, do what you feel is right to help the LO. Waiting to hear from your pedi is silly because obviously they are going to say it's okay.

  • We like to use Tylenol. With my oldest who is 5. we used teething tablets there worked great but they did have the recall so I would wait until they OK it. Tylenol. Is safe at the correct dose for your child you can always call your pediatrician and ask for the right dose.
  • when it comes to drug administration, I would go ahead and ask a doc. I know that a lot of people have said they don't feel like they need to consult the doc for parenting issues, but this is really not a parenting question, as much as a medical question. Especially since Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is metabolized by the liver, it would be good to check with the doctor as to how much/how long would be appropriated for a baby of your child's age...

I would agree with that to a point. But, every pedi I have had for my children automatically gave me a sheet with the proper dosages for infants. So I consult a paper.

  • With our daughter we used teething tabs after her first few teeth came in but when she was super miserable (with the 1st bottom teeth) we gave her some baby tylenol. She didnt really like teethers and chew toys... This time around we found that filling a pacifier with water then freezing it is something our little guy really likes. If you do this make sure you have 2 in the freezer that way when one is thawed out you can pop a new in :) And we will get some teething tabs for him as well.. Note that we are in Europe so I am not 100% on the differences between the US brands and here.
