Vitamin K

I am torn with this.  We are delaying the Hep B vaccine and not getting the eye ointment, but this one is tough.  I don't really see an issue with getting it, but at the same time, if it's not necessary, why do it?  The risk of baby having a bleeding issue is rare, but I would feel guilty if something happened.  After some reading, it seems like most mammals are born w/ love Vit K which makes me think maybe there is a reason for that.

What do you ladies think?  I'd like to have my mind made up in time for our MW appointment tomorrow.

It's the one thing we said yes To. My midwife told me seeing one infant with a brain bleed was enough to make her recommend it to everyone. Made sense to me!

  • We delayed Hep B but did both the eye goop and Vit K shot.  Eye goop because I was GBS+ and it couldn't hurt for extra protection.  Vit K because we planned on circumcising.

Weigh the pros and cons, risks and benefits.  The benefits of Vit K and erithomycin, outweighed the risks of not receiving the two for us.

  • LO had this in the hospital.  IMO the benefits of Vit K far outweigh the risks.
  • I did vit K. Unlike the eye ointment, it seemed like a situation where the benefits outweighed the risks.

I'm not going to make that decision until the birth. There are certain things that make a baby more at risk for a brain bleed. If my delivery is traumatic in any way I will be doing the shot. If not I will be doing the oral drops. With my last she had to be pulled out with a vacuum so that wasn't even really a question.

This was what we decided to do about the vitamin K shot as well.

This. I am waiting to see how delivery goes. With dd I was okay with the vitamin K because I spent 16 hours hooked up to pitocin, and it was traumatic for me, let alone her. This time, if everything goes normally I will opt for the oral vitamin K.

  • We don't do the Vit K . This is my fourth birth . Just do what your most comfortable with .
  • It's the one thing we do. We declined at my homebirth with my DD and should have done it - she had a hematoma that lasted for 10 days until we got the shot with the pedi. Hours later, it was noticeably smaller.  We'll just get it at birth this time, and like you we don't do the hep B or eye ointment.
  • We didn't do it at birth. However, DD had a tongue tie that needed to be clipped. The pedi required us to do vit K prior to the procedure. Like a PP said, I was willing to do it at birth if there was a reason, bruising, difficult birth, etc. I do not intend to get it for a future child unless there is a reason. Good luck with your decision.

  • We do it. I've seen no credible risks, only major (if rarely required) benefits.
  • This will be the only thing the LO receives. Like pp stated the risks of not having it seemed so much worse. I feel better that is vitamin and not some chemical being put into baby. I do like the idea of being able to revisit the idea of opting out if the birth is non-traumatic.

  • I did with #1 because he was a vaccum extraction (we decided after his birth).  This time I probably won't.  I think babies are made to cope just fine just the way they are. When the vit K was being given, it was the first time my calm baby screamed after he was born so I don't want to put him through that
