Depression

My mom just visited and made me aware that my depression is not normal. I've had it my whole adult life and I think it's getting worse. I'm taking out everything on my husband and the only joy I feel right now is my daughter.

I wrote my doctor an email to ask about medication but I'm wondering if anyone here is in the same boat.

I'm breastfeeding and will continue to do so. Do your meds affect your baby or supply? Do you find that they make you gain weight, sleep too much, feel weird, etc,?

I was on Effexor for about 6.5 years before getting pregnant with LO. I was on it for anxiety and depression. It is definitely not normally and you should really talk to someone about. You'll be amazed the difference you'll feel. You will not be "perfect" as we are human and wi have off days, but you"ll be able to manage those days. I did not have any of the side effects you mentioned. They are some meds that are ok to take while BF. IMPO I would not recommend EFfexor because if you do decide to stop taking it one day the withdrawals are horrible. I had to go thought it during my 1st trimester with morning sickness.....no fun. Good luck and please talk to someone. Your baby feeds off your emotions so you could be effecting her and not even know it.

  • There are meds that you can take but nothing is 100 percent safe while breast feeding or pregnant. I'm sorry you're having difficulty but its good that you're asking for help. You may not need meds. What about counseling? Or something just for you to focus yourself like yoga? When you talk to your doc ask about getting the lowest dose possible first if you do try meds. They can start you off with something very light!

I'm on a low dose of Zoloft (50mg) and it's been totally fine with BF. Hope you can get back to feeling more like yourself soon, mama!!!

There are plenty of meds that are considered fine when the benefit outweighs the risk.  Know that the hormones associated with BF may also be exacerbating the depression...You may feel better once you stop.  I'm all for BF as long as possible but not if it isn't best for the mom's mental well-being!
