2nd Trimester

Somedays...*mini-vent*

Somedays my bump is bigger than others... today its not.. it just looks like I'm a little bloated... At 14 weeks I am not only ready to feel LO but to see it!!

An old friend is pregnant with her second and already looks 4 months at only 11 weeks... 2nd timers, is this common??

I feel like DH doesn't really understand and my mom has said "don't worry there will come a day when you won't want to be let alone look pregnant"

I would just feel more confident that everything is a-o.k. with LO if I felt and had the bump.  But maybe at 5'10'' there's just more space...

  • It took me a long time to show with # 1

    #2 and # 3 I showed very quickly.

  • Thank you ladies... that does help truly. :)  one more questions... how did you calm your fears that everything was ok down in womb-world without feeling or seeing anything??

  • You'll definitely get there! I have a long torso, so I didn't start showing with my first child until after 20 weeks. I'm in my third pregnancy and I showed earlier with each one.

My doctor says that if there are not signs of a problem, try not to worry. If you aren't bleeding or cramping, everything should be fine. If you are bleeding and cramping, that is not always the sign of a major issue though. Always see your doctor if that happens, but for me, I have that problem after sex almost everytime. It's always external cervical bleeding though, so baby is 100% ok.  Try not to worry.

Regarding the original question, bumps change size due to bloating and baby's position. Additionally, you're still pretty early in your pregnancy, so that's why your bump isn't huge. I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter the 1st time a stranger asked me about my pregnancy. It took me FOREVER to start showing. LOL, it's ok... you'll be fine.

  • That's what I keep telling myself... I've never had spotting... nausea is still hanging around... My OB's cheerful little nurse pats my arm smiling "Such a good sign" while all I wanna do is sleep with a bucket..

The only "cramping" I had was really round ligament pain... way off by my hip bones..

I'm also a very hippy girl.. big hips long torso... I'll just assume baby purchased the master suite and hasn't filled it yet... :)

It's good you know the difference between cramping and round ligament pain. That should minimize your worrying. RLP is not a problem; cramping could be. RLP sucks, but it is a normal part of pregnancy (for some people)

My understanding is that STMs tend to show earlier because the muscles in that area have already been stretched out by the previous kiddo(s), so they expand more quickly/easily.

  • FTM and I'm 25 weeks and I still have days I don't look pg... just a little chubby... I started feeling movement at around 18 weeks though so it'll get here soon enough just be patient!  I think I worried more when I first started feeling movement because it wasn't consistent.  she would be very active one day and I'd feel nothing for a few days then it started to become daily.  its hard to do but try not to worry.  I'm thankful for my little bump because I can still shave my legs and pick things up off the floor and easily get out of bed compared to others on my BMB

  • It took me a long time to show with my first.  This go around I started showing at like 12 weeks!  Your bump will come and I'm sure you LO is just fine.

People show differently. Even a second or third time mom might now show early.

    A bump doesn't mean much.

  • Hmm a couple of things:

1.) At 14 weeks its normal not to show. Your uterus just emerged from under your pubic bone around 12 weeks. With my first viable pregnancy I didn't start showing until 23 weeks. Don't worry. You will show before you know it. I know you are eager and excited, but enjoy being able to bend over to get things, tie your shoes and all before you start showing. Everyday things become really hard to do after that. Its exciting yes, but it can be trying.

2.) I started showing at 16 weeks this time around. Its common for moms that are on their second, third or fourth pregnancy to show earlier due to muscle memory. Their muscles are already stretched from the first baby and so things tend to pooch out sooner. Also, your uterus doesn't return to the exact same size after giving birth. Its a little bit enlarged. So you start off a tiny bit bigger with subsequent pregnancies.

3.) I am confused as to how having a bump means "everything is ok" in your mind? Yes, it means things are developing but it doesn't guaruntee anything. I don't mean to be a negative nancy, but second and third trimester losses happen too. No one likes to think about them, or talk about them, but its a reality. So, having a bump doesn't necessarily mean that things are going well. It just means you are physically responding to a growing fetus, but plenty of women I have known have unfortunately had a great bump and had later losses. So, I know it somehow translates in your mind to "healthy bump/showing = healthy pregnancy" but that is not always the case. Its faulty logic to talk yourself into this. The best way to think of your pregnancy is that, until someone tells you otherwise, everything is fine. Today you are pregnant and love your baby. Really repeat this phrase.

I know it seems like a HUGE deal right now (that's while you are venting) but I promise that you will show before you know it. Don't jump the gun and try to be patient.

  • Totally understand where you're coming from with this... and I agree that I shouldn't talk myself into something like that.

I shall keep that in mind along with the phrases:

Today I am pregnant and love your baby.

    Give it to God.

  • I'm a FTM and didn't "show" until well after 20 weeks.

14 weeks is still fairly early.

Totally this. And if you are 5'10 you absolutely have more room for LO to hide.
  • 21 weeks here and still don't look pg.  Barely a roundness, no bump whatsoever.  I'm 5'7" but have a long torso.  My babies like to move UP before they move out.

  • i felt that way too. right now you dont look pregnant *enough* - i get it. i'm unmistakably pregnant now and that *** gets old too. just look at the entire 9 months as a temporary thing. thats made it easier for me to just let it happen as it comes. and dont ask DH about it. he wont ever get it. as long as he still wants to have sex with you you're golden. at some point he might become scared to have sex with you for fear he might hurt you. let him know you still want it. you'll get through it!
