Infertility

what kind of sadistic person invented the ganirelix shot?

i went to my monitoring appointment this morning (today is day 6 of stims) and have good stuff going on in there.  still have 8 follies between 9-13.  dr. told me to go home and start ganirelix this morning.  i had heard rumors of this dull needle, stinging shot that leaves welts, and let's just say i was doubtful because i hadn't had a problem with any other of my meds the past 4 years.

oh.my.god.  i got ready, counted to 5, jabbed myself in a dart like motion with the needle- which promptly bounced back against my skin like it was trying to impale a rubber band.

plan b.  yelled for husband who was on his way out the door to work to come back and jab this thing in my stomach.  which he did (he did all my PIO shots last time so i knew he could handle it).

oh the burning.  the itching.  my now good mood from the monitoring appt. has turned into sheer hatred for the needle company.

plus, i stepped on a worm and cried because i killed it.  yep, stim emotions are in full effect today! :)

hope everyone has a terrific wednesday!

Re: what kind of sadistic person invented the ganirelix shot?

  • omg that sounds horrific. Is there no way you can use a different syringe? Or is it a pen?

I go running every morning and must look like a right dork skipping around to avoid all the slugs and worms!

  • My first one was horrible but the rest weren't bad at all, I guess the first was just a bad needle? Hope the rest go better for you!

  • I dreaded the ganirelix shots. I really had to jab that sucker hard to make it puncture the skin. That was the only shot that hurt and gave me bruises. But at least it's premixed so I didn't have to stress about mixing.

  • What other stims are you taking? I used Gonal f and Menopur and mixed them together for one injection. When I added the Ganirelix I just added it to the mix. That way it was one injection with all 3 meds and I used a regular, sharp needle. Maybe ask your RE if you can do that?

  • I didn't really have issues with Ganirelix.  Yes, I had to puncture myself harder than with the other needles, but it wasn't as bad as menopur.  I dreaded that shot every.single.night.
  • I had spare needles & syringes from the menopur, so I just injected the ganerelix into a new syringe and put on a better needle.  So much better than trying to use the prefilled needle.  It didn't change the side effects as far as the burning/itching, but it helped the pain of the injection itself.  Good Luck!!

  • My first Ganirelix was the worst...needle bouncing back, welt at inj site, and discomfort for at least 30 min after. The rest weren't bad at all. Once I knew how much force to use the needle went right in. I didn't have welts with the rest either...not sure what that was about.

  • Yay for a great monitoring app!! That sounds great!

I have to agree that of all the shots, Ganirelix was the worst. I hope you don't have to take it for too long!

  • Thanks all, the welt only lasted a little bit, I guess I was really surprised at how dull the needle is! Oh well, guess I have to suck it up and hang in there for a few more days... just hanging out now and waiting for nurse to call with E2 results from this morning.
