Doc gave us the go ahead to start adding rice cereal to DS's diet. Talk to me about how you introduced it to your little ones. He normally eats 5-6 ozs of formula. If I follow the directions on the box, it makes between 1 and 2 ozs of cereal/formula soup. Ha! Do I then give him the remaining 3-4 ozs of formula that he would normally eat?
Re: Cereal
Since you asked.... I'd suggest skipping cereal all together and just using oatmeal. The cereal has zero nutritional value. And you don't even have to start with oatmeal. You can start with pures if you'd like.
If he doesn't like it it's ok to wait a while. At this point food is for fun and to learn with, not to replace formula or breast milk. I know plenty of women who fed their babies milk for the first year of life before introducing anything else.
It's really up to you. :

We tried going straight to purees but I think it was just a little too sweet for DS as he was making a face similar to that if he had sucked on a lemon so I reverted to baby oatmeal. I make 1 Tablespoon of oatmeal to .5oz BM (warmed). I had tried it with DS sitting in the Bumbo but everything just ran right out in a river of drool. So I switched him to his Rock n Play so he is slightly reclined, gave smaller amounts so he could handle it and he takes it all like a champ.
As PPs have mentioned, give a bottle then wait 30-45 minutes before cereal. Also don't forget to wait the time period recommended by your pedi before introducing new foods (ours said three days which I presume is the standard).
You may also want to use, if you don't already, a bib with one of those catch trays-- I love the Tommee Tippee ones (dishwasher safe).
