No words

So my DD doesn't really say any words yet.  She babbles a ton, and is starting to babble with purpose, like hold out her cup and say "blah," but no real discernible words.  My DS had like 20 words by now, and it sounds like most of your LOs have a bunch of words too.  I definitely plan to ask the pedi about it next week at her 15 month appointment, but I was just wondering if anyone else's LOs have no words yet.

My mom claims I didn't say a word until close to 2 (and of course the on-going joke is that I haven't stopped since), but I don't want to just assume nothing is wrong because I didn't talk until 2.  Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: No words

  • Totally in the same boat!!!  DD has mimcked me in a real word form ONCE ("moo" - i excitedly posted about it!) and that was months ago... she mimicked my mother once the same day ("chicken").  Last week she pointed to the neighborhood cat and said "Kitty".... but since then it's just been "ki".... We have no other words.  Everything is some form of "dah"... Our dog Maddie is KINDA "dee" and her duckie is KINDA "duh"... but that's it.  I'm starting to stress about it too though!

Every kid is different.  I don't think they get concerned unless they aren't speaking by 2.  Our kids have plenty of time :)
  • Addy has no words. Only "more" in sign language and that's only when prompted. She "talks" quite a lot though. Closest she has come to a word is sometimes when DH will try to get her to say "Papa" while we're in the car (that's what we call DH in case that was unclear) she will repeatedly shout back "dah!" every time he says "Papa" but I definitely don't count that as a word. She does not refer to him as "dah" at any other time so I think she is just making the same noise back over and over.

  • None here really either. He shakes his head 'no'. I think he might also be saying yes and mom mom mom a whole bunch all the time. Otherwise nada. I'm not stressing, but will ask at the 15 month appt.

  • Mine does have some words, but it's mostly just me, DH and our sitter that understand them.  However, my LO doesn't mimic us, at least not in the sense of he repeats words right after we say them.  He says (and does) things when he pleases.

  • My DS has no words and I was not worried about it.

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not attractive. - Happy Gilmore
  • No words for either kid. DS is starting to mimic though.
