We have a couple trips coming up this summer that we'll have to make with the babies. Both trips are about 6 hours, one way. For those of you that have made long road trips, tell me how did it go? Any tips?
We did a 24 hour trip with a 6 month old. Luckily we are had a large vehicle so I was able to do *shh!* diaper changes while we were driving. I kept bottles of water and room temp and mixed bottles as we went. On our way back I ended up buying pre-mixed formula and feeding our son bottles that way. Either was fine.
I also got baby food in those pouches - which worked out great. We also moved his schedule around a little so that I would give him bottles right around his naps times so that he would fall to sleep easier. We also had a sleep sheep and we would turn on during his naps times.
If he got really cranky - we would stop and rest stops and walk around. He would do really good until nighttime. If we could have - maybe you can do the trip at night and your LO can sleep the whole time?

Wait, you unbuckled LO while driving to change diapers? Why wouldn't you just pull over? That's extremely dangerous.

When LO one was about 2 months old, we did a trip that was about 5 hours drive. It took us about 6.5 hours to get there. We ended up only stopping twice, I think, to feed and diaper change. However, the feed and changing, at that time, took about an hour. The trip back was h**l. It took us about 8-9 hours. He made it about 2 hours and then we were having to stop every 30 minutes.
I think things might be better now that he is older, but nonetheless we now don't take car rides/trips any longer than about 2.5-3 hours--which is about how long we can count on him to nap after we feed him/change him. We've made multiple 2.5-3 hour trips and they have always worked out well. But about at the 3 hour mark is when he wakes up and is tired of being in the carseat and then it is pretty much over after that.
I'm sure at some point we will take a longer trip again. I think when we do it again we will probably leave pretty late in the evening close to his normal bedtime so we can feed him good and he will sleep the entire time. My baby is pretty high maintenance, though, and just isn't going to be happy sitting in a car seat much longer than a couple of hours.
I've never attempted to feed or change in the car. We have always stopped.
