Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Constipation

My son has been FF since he was not quite 3 months old and we started solids at 5 and a half months because the formula alone was not cutting it anymore.

Well we have also been giving bites and sections of our food, like mashed potatoes, french fries and practically all potatoes, we have given him small bites of bread, crackers, and all kinds of other things!

Then we started whole milk the day before his birthday, because he ran out of formula, and he had been eating a lot of other dairy products, like ice cream and cheese (I'm not the one who fed them to him) and he didn't poop for 4 days after the 15th of April...It was horrible to see him so upset and in pain like that but I was giving him everything I could to help. Powder fiber in his bottles. Lots of juice and I finally started feeding him 3 meals of purees/baby food a day...before I was only feeding him 2x, but since the beginning of February he was only eating once a day!

He had croup in January and just didn't want to eat for the longest time, it was hard getting him back into the puree habit.

Has anyone else been having any problems with constipation after their kid's first birthday and starting milk/regular food?

Re: Constipation

  • Yes, completely normal. Their body has to get used to actually working to digest food. If you keep retreating to formula, it won't happen. Call your doc and ask for the correct miralax dose- it is a gentle stool med that won't make him have diarrhea, cramping or any side effects, but should make him regular again.

Good luck, and just know it is completely normal. We went a week without a stool once, shortly after his second birthday.

  • Yes my DD did from time to time.  I have recently been giving her epsom baths which works as a laxative.  I add about 1/4 c to her bath (every other night or so) and let her linger in there for a few extra minutes.  It seems to help her and a side benefit of the epsom is that it's very calming and soothing.

  • Totally normal! It takes their bodies a little bit to get used to the new food. Talk to your pedi about it. We tried all the natural stuff to begin with (more fiber, juice, water, etc.) In the end, we gave her a little bit of miralax per our doctor and that allowed her to go. Now she is 18 months and she doesn't need the miralax anymore.
