Bike Helmet for 4-yr old

DS will be 4 in July.  His toddler helmet is too tight.  I've looked at several for 5-8 yr olds and all the reviews say they are too big for their 5 yr olds.  Anyone find one that fits this age range?  DS is skinny but his head is a little big.

Thanks for any recommendations.

I would try going to a bike shop and get him fitted for a helmet.

DS is 4 and has a really big head.  I got him one of the 5 year old helmets at Target and it fits well.

  • DS's first helmet at age 2 was for 5-8 year olds.  DH just got him a new one over the weekend (at Target) and it is for 8+.  (DS is 3.5 years old).  He has a huge head (always been 90+ percentile).
  • Depends on your child's head because my son has one that is supposed to be for around 8yo so it is probably 5 to 8 and he got it at 2yo and is close to outgrowing it at 6. I would strongly recommend one that is fully adjustable meaning inside there are straps that fit around the circumference I the head that adjust. I fringe when I see kids where those cute Raskull helmets that only adjust on the him strap and I watch the helmet move all around because if the kid falls those helmets are flying of many kids. Of course they probably fit some kids but I cannot imagine a helmet that does not properly adjust will properly fit more than one year.

ETA: my son's head is also like 97 when he was last measured at 5yo. But if your child's head is small I would be more worried because the helmet would be big where if you have a big head it just won't get on. We were originally fitted at a bike store but next one will probably be from Costco.

You need to go and just try a bunch of different brands/styles on.  You can't go by age as all kids have different size/shape heads.  We found great ones for our girls at Target (ages 5 and almost 7 years, one with a very tiny head).  I also second the recommendation to go to a bike shop and have them help you.  Our police station just had our bike rodeo last week where they will test the kids helmets and make sure they are on correctly and all that jazz.  They do it every spring.

DS has a helmet for 5-8 year olds and it's already on the biggest setting since his noggin is so ginormous.
  • DS, age 3, is actually in a 'youth' helmet.  He outgrew the toddler helmet that DD was able to wear until she was 4 1/2.  It's a Giro, I believe.  I ended up measuring his head, and choosing some based on his head size.  Also, the adjustable ones are really great, I find.

  • Thanks all!  A successful trip yielded a very fine kids' helmet for 5-8 that is a very fine Angry birds specimen.  Glad I took your advice- some same brand and size fit wrong, some were too hard, some the padding was too soft... I can't believe I was going to just order one on amazon!
