Boy, I don't know anything about this kind of stuff. Can someone explain what the heck this is? I feel like such a dumby, but we are TTC and I would like it to happen sooner then later...I feel so silly. May this OPK would help. THANK YOU!
OPK is an ovulation prediction kit. Right before you ovulate, your body releases a substantial amount of a hormone called Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which is what triggers your body to actually release the egg. What the OPK does is measures the LH in your body and when you get a positive on the OPK, it means you are having your "surge" which means you should ovulate in the next 24-48 hours.
Since it's a prediction tool, it can tell you before you ovulate, so you can time BD appropriately. This is as compared to temping, where you can confirm ovulation after it has happened with the temperature spike (caused by a spike in Progesterone, which is a "hot" hormone).
A lot of people like to use both the OPK and temping, so they can predict ovulation, and then confirm that it has happened with the temperature spike. Some times your body can gear up for ovulation by having its LH surge, but not actually release the egg. The rise in progesterone is caused by the corpus luteum, which is what is left over of the follicle after the egg has been released. You won't get the spike in temperature unless there actually is a corpus luteum, confirming ovulation has actually occurred.
