Babies: 3 - 6 Months

No idea what to do...

DS's sleep habits have totally changed, and it has me loopy with exhaustion and confusion. He used to wake up between 7-7:30. We did an eat, play, sleep routine which always landed his last nap of the day close to five, with a bedtime routine starting at 6:30 DS down by 7 at night. There were two MOTN feedings, one at 1 and one at 5 a.m.

Well, for the last two days, he's been waking up at 6 instead. This lands the last nap of the day ending now at 4:15ish. I can't keep him up for 2.5 hours until 6:30, or he would be a basket case. I tried bumping it up, starting at 6 and trying to have him down by 6:30, to make up for the hour he has lost for himself in the morning. This has lended itself to a 9:30 p.m. wake up, which is not usual, a midnight, 2, and then today he was up for the day at FIVE. When he got up at 2 he stayed awake until three last night. He also has been a screaming mess before bed the last two nights, when before it was bottle, put down drowsy but awake, and he would drift off easily.

Is 5-5:30 too late in the evening for a last nap? He only naps for 30 minutes after his 2 longer early morning naps, so it would end somewhere around 6, and I would start bedtime routine at 7:15-7:30. We had such a great, do-able sleep pattern going, I'm sad to see it go. And clearly, putting him down a bit earlier is not the answer. Sad

  • At this point, I'd stop trying to follow a schedule and just follow your LO's cues. He'll work out a new routine that fits his new sleep and food needs on his own.

  • Honestly, this is the exact reason I'm not an advocate of sticking to a schedule.  It's more about routine because especially during the first year baby's sleep needs are rapidly evolving.  If you focus on doing a routine instead of what the clock says things will be so much easier.  They'll let you know what they need sleep-wise, just go with it.

A lot of babies will take a short cat nap in the evenings.  I would let him sleep if he wants to and then watch for signs of tiredness afterwards to gauge when he's going to want to go to bed for the night and then plan your bedtime routine accordingly.

Don't worry.  If you don't like this new schedule he'll be on to a new one soon enough :)

In regards to an evening nap, DS usually takes one around 5:30 In fact he is taking it now! It's usually only a half hour and when he gets up we do our bedtime routine, have a bottle then down for the night between 7 and 7:30. This is his rhythm and I am doing my best to go with it!

  • So far, bedtime went much better tonight. DS fell asleep close to 5:30 in his swing, and woke up at ten to 6. He stayed up for another hour and I started the bedtime routine like usual at 7. No screaming, no fits. He got drowsy drinking his bottle, I put him down when he finished, and he squirmed himself to sleep like before. Here's hoping the night progresses well!
